For some reason the White House decided today would be good time to drop their memorandum on how to make climate economic models better. The most exciting thing to me are the following two recommendations: "1) Implement the recommendations of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology to quantify extreme event risk for the next 25 years at a high spatial resolution across the country; 2) Create a National Catastrophic Modeling platform able to quantify extreme weather risks, integrating the effects of climate change, and provide recommendations on agencies suitable to host such a platform;" Seems like the federal government is about to get into catastrophe modeling!! https://lnkd.in/eJ_yjjVz

Is it time to break the hegemony of General Circulation Models (GCMs) on climate analysis? And if so, what alternatives should be considered? These are some of the questions raised in a new paper by Erica Thompson and others for the American Meteorological Society. I dive into it for today's Unpacking Climate Risk, focusing on one of the alternates to GCMs proposed: physical climate storylines.
