Like strategic beachhead operations in WWII, entering the right market is key. Had a quick read of "Disciplined Entrepreneurship" by Bill Aulet on my last flight, and here’s what makes a good Total Addressable Market (TAM): 1. Clear Need: Target markets with specific, unmet needs. 2. Sizable: Ensure the market is large enough to provide real growth potential. 3. Accessible: The market should be reachable with your existing capabilities. Just as in military strategy, the right initial positioning in business can determine long-term victory.

In my conversation with Kais Baker from Turn/River Capital we talked about the story of Paessler GmbH, the company I founded in 1997 and which we were able to grow to almost 500 people and 500.000 customers in a bootstrapped manner, without external investments. We also talked about the reasoning behind getting Turn/River Capital on board as investors now, which is based on my long-time expressed goal, that my company should outlive its founder.

Carpe Diem = Caesar the Day Whilst he didn’t quite nail the timing - the broad concept of the leap year can be traced back to Caesar. A day literally placed to balance our calendar with the Earth’s orbit preventing seasons from drifting.  TecFlo’s fiscal year end is the last day in February and so, as it happens, on this particular day of this particular year, we are offered a full extra day. Seize’ar the day has never been quite so fitting. It got me thinking about whether we apply the same value to everyday. Or whether based on infrequent appearance ‘this day’ has more value than ‘other days’.  If and when the 29th February falls on a Friday - by nature of our 4 day week - will it then be a missed opportunity ? The relationship between value, performance and day is an interesting one. I’m certain looking hard enough I could read an article convincingly presenting any of the seven days of the week as the most valuable in respect of performance and output. I am aware of a study, conducted at MIT, which gifted a day a month to its team for creative work, development and project exploration. A full day with ‘no core agenda’ or ‘required deliverable’. Reports suggested that not only did it increase overall satisfaction but the value and productive output on that day was considerably higher. Are there any business leaders doing this ? Conversations buzzing around TecFlo involve – premises expansion planning, water customers, couplers, check gauges, couplers, new fittings, shelf coolers, couplers, whether an urn is more energy efficient than two kettles, couplers and a trip to Italy to meet a new strategic customer. Did I mention couplers? Next week I look forward to starting a new year, seeing some valued customers and shaking hands with new ones. On Thursday TecFlo will be in attendance at the BFBI Northern Lunch in Leeds and it will be great to take a moment and reflect on the industry milestones as well as the business ones.
