Currently in Australia, what children eat at school is their caregivers' responsibility, but packing lunches can be challenging for a variety of reasons. This means school lunches are a source of inequity, with many kids not receiving the nutrition they need to support their optimal learning and development. School could be the ideal setting to provide meals to children and teach about nutrition, but what needs to happen for this to become a reality in Australia? The Food Research & Action Center published the new report called "The State of Healthy School Meals for All: California, Massachusetts, Maine, Nevada and Vermont Lead the Way". What were the key findings? - School lunch participation in #California, #Maine, #Massachusetts, #Nevada, and #Vermont — the five states that implemented Healthy School Meals for All policies during the 2022–2023 school year — increased compared to pre-pandemic participation levels. - Student breakfast participation increased in four of the five states but not as dramatically as lunch participation, showing there is still room for growth in the School Breakfast Program. - The response to Healthy School Meals for All policies has been positive, with state child nutrition agencies noting many benefits to providing school meals at no cost to all families and public opinion polling showing broad support. We wanted to share some insightful stats from a recent poll of over 2000 parents across the UK: 🔶 80% of parents want to see more rigorous enforcement of nutritional standards for school food. 🔶 89% of parents want to see school meals offer a range of healthy options. 🔶 84% support replacing sugary desserts with more fruit and healthy yoghurts. 🔶 77% of parents would like schools to be encouraged to serve foods that are good for nature and the environment. 🔶 Just over 50% of parents believe their children's school meals are nutritious, with parents of secondary school-aged children expressing less confidence compared to parents of primary school-aged children.
