*More people in early 20s out of work from ill health than early 40s - study* This is a terrible sign of things to come. Governments need to prioritise population health. Growth and economic targets are all downstream of a healthy, productive population. With decisive action, it is possible to make meaningful changes in a 4 year election period. Not only is there a demand for improvements in services that have deteriorated over the last decade but healthier populations build more effective societies. The incentives for change are clear. This is why population health is one of our three strategic priorities:  We know that South east London faces significant population health challenges - some of which are common to urban locations and some of which are unique to our area. There is a high burden of physical and mental ill health, with growing health inequalities. In 2023 we worked together to implement new interventions to help address these population health challenges. One example of how we have done this is the new Vital 5 screening programme 📋🏥. 🎉 Excited to share our latest publication! 📢 In our study, we conducted a comparative longitudinal analysis of adult excess weight inequalities in England, using Health Survey for England data from 2009 to 2019. Traditional health inequality metrics often rely on headcount-based approaches, which don’t capture the full picture—especially the severity of health status. By employing a distribution-sensitive, "health poverty" approach based on the FGT framework, we aimed to address this gap. Key findings:  🔍 Excess weight inequality is hitting the most deprived neighborhoods hardest, with a 52% increase in severity from 2014 to 2019. 📊 In 2019, the most deprived groups faced more severe excess weight compared to affluent counterparts, with a stark "East-West divide" where Western regions were more affected. 👩 Among women, a significant social gradient exists, with more affluent women having a lower prevalence of excess weight. The world is facing a serious health problem as obesity rates, especially among children, are reaching alarming levels. The most recent analysis, using Body Mass Index criteria, shows a troubling pattern affecting mainly low and middle-income areas. The disturbing projection predicts that without immediate intervention, more than half the population might live with chronic obesity. Additionally, the global cost of health conditions associated with obesity could skyrocket to over $4 trillion annually by 2035. It represents a staggering 3% of the world's GDP, signifying a health and economic crisis.   What’s more alarming is that the surge in obesity is not limited to a specific region, it's a worldwide concern. 🌎 These findings will soon be presented to United Nations policymakers and member states, urging a collective response to tackle this imminent threat to public health. 🌐🤝 It's crucial to act urgently and address the complex factors behind this epidemic, including societal, environmental, and biological influences. Policymakers must implement strategic measures beyond individual responsibility and target the root causes. 🏛️ As we await the presentation of this crucial data to the United Nations, it is urgent that we also collectively advocate for immediate and impactful solutions. New #GBD2021 research assesses the impact of the #COVID19 pandemic beyond its first two years to provide valuable insights on the implications for the future of health care systems, economies, and societies. One 🔑 finding? Despite the slowed pace, improvements in childhood mortality persisted during the pandemic, albeit with stark regional disparities. In 2021, ¼ child deaths worldwide occurred in South Asia and ½ in sub-Saharan Africa. While overall, there have been improvements, with childhood mortality continuing to drop globally since 1950, population trends from 2017 revealed a global growth rate decline — something that accelerated during the pandemic.
