What is the 20-80 Scale, and how is it important in MLB Scouting? The 20-80 Scale categorizes players into specific roles such as "Every day SS," "Defensive Replacement," or "Middle Reliever" based on their observed abilities. The scale ranges from 20 to 80, with ratings in the 20's being Non-Prospect types, and closer to 80 being Perennial Powerhouses (Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, etc.). Scouts use the 20-80 scale to evaluate a players present value, as well as predict their future value to a team. Familiarity with the scale enhances scouting evaluation and communication, providing a standardized language for assessing and discussing players like a professional scout. Within the 2nd presentation of my scouting program, we have focused on an analysis of a team/collective. As such, we stressed the behavior of each third, both on/off-the-ball, the advantages, disadvantages, and types of profiles required for man-marking and zonal-marking, scouting a player based on zones and maps, positional play, and so on. So far, it has been a great, meaningful experience, as the demand for registered is continuously increasing.
