Good article by David Leonhardt explaining the political potency of immigration as evidenced by recent EU parliamentary elections resulting in big wins for anti-immigration right-wing parties. However, as the article rightfully concludes, immigration is a complex issue as “very high levels of immigration can cause political and economic problems. So can very low levels.” https://lnkd.in/dpd2fxvQ

Despite the complexity of migration and U.S. #immigrationpolicy, the topic tends to get reduced to sound bites and quick fixes, said American Immigration Council’s Aaron Reichlin-Melnick at a Baker Institute conference in May. The event was co-presented by the Houston Chronicle and explored the politicization of immigration ahead of the 2024 U.S. elections. 📆 Keep up with our past and future programming on major policy issues ahead of #Election2024: https://bit.ly/3WxhtSJ.

France will have elections at the end of June. Macron just dissolved Parliament after a big win by Le Pen’s anti-immigration party this weekend. Germany’s anti-immigration party also had a big electoral result this weekend. Meanwhile, the UK will have a parliamentary election on July 4 and while Labour is heavily favored, will Reform UK finish ahead of the Tories? That seems hard to believe. Nigel Farage of Brexit fame is running as a candidate for Reform UK. All of a sudden immigration seems to be a big issue this month - — Biden’s executive order limiting asylum; — Wins in Germany and France by the leading immigration restrictionist parties; — The emergence of Farage as a candidate in the UK election which is ominously on July 4. (A good day of the year for political revolution). Canada and Australia have already scaled back immigration programs. •••
