Our hair is history. Our hair is power. #GoodAdsMatter In Puerto Rico, Afro-descendant heritage is gaining recognition amid ongoing hair discrimination battles over ethnic hairstyles. Mizani, a Lโ€™Oreal brand specialising in textured hair care, launched a campaign celebrating ancestral hairstyles, spotlighting their cultural significance. During the time of colonisation, braids were not just hairstyles; they were freedom maps. Mizani's campaign recreates these historical braids, honouring Black History and empowering Puerto Rico's Afro-descendant community. Portraits feature women flaunting historically accurate braids as intricate escape routes, showcasing craftsmanship that symbolises cultural resilience. From billboards near salons to social media and newspapers, Mizani's message is clear: these braids are not just hairstyles, they are witnesses of histories weaving an intricate tapestry of rich stories. ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป ๐˜‚๐—ฝ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ% ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ, ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต๐—น๐˜† ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ- https://lnkd.in/dg3JEGpK Country: Puerto Rico Year: 2024 Brand: L'Orรฉal Agency: DDB Latina Puerto Rico Chief Creative Officer: Enrique (Kike) Renta Creative Directors: Mauricio Cortรฉs & Juan Luis Fernรกndez Toledo Copywriter: Frances Guzman Lluberes Art Directors: Liliana Peรฑa Parrales & Hernando Torres Designer: Andres Mazuera ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ-๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐˜† Good Ads Matter, ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐˜† Purpose Studios.

Thank you for sharing this. Iโ€™m always grateful to be reminded that our beauty and creativity wasnโ€™t always borne out of sheer delight in being โ€œinterestingโ€โ€ฆit came out of necessity and survival. Iโ€™m also fascinated when people who DONโ€™T share this heritage try to โ€œhold courtโ€ and ask for receipts for items THEY NEVER PAID FOR. Whether this ad is โ€œscientifically provenโ€ (HOW, Sway? You know where I can find an enslaved African I can ask?) or provided in OUR traditional historical accounts of generational STORYTELLINGโ€ฆmind ya OWN business. But this isnโ€™t my post, so Iโ€™ll refrain from any further guiding directives. ๐Ÿ™„

Nice story, though no scientific source confirms this hairstyle actually had such a purpose.

This is absolutely lovely and correct. I recently did an art collection on hair and cowries showing the historical relationship between these. Hair is more than a symbol of beauty, I call it an heritage. From my research, I found out hair was used to save/store food like grains when they were travelling. You can out the collection via this link: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/favour-ben-modupe_i-went-back-to-my-ex-dont-judge-me-yet-activity-7203280186329440256-tOzH?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android

This is brilliant, informative, educational and powerful! Now hopefully all the cultural appropriaters who have been captilizing off of this hairstyle can learn a lesson to stop utilizing Black womenโ€™s aesthetics for their own benefit!

As inspiring as this campaign is, it's worth remembering that L'Orรฉal heavily support the IDF and Israel, whose government actively sterilise their black Ethiopian community and treat them as second class citizens. This is performative at best.
