In 2019 an agreement was signed between 5 parties to work together to look at the feasibility and options for reintroducing salmon into the Canadian side of the Columbia River. Since signing, the Syilx Okanagan Nation, Ktunaxa Nation, Secwépemc Nation, Canadian Government, and BC Government have been making great progress to make this a reality. As 40% of the 2000km that make up the mighty Columbia River is located in BC, it is imperative that the Federal and Provincial Governments continue to be involved. However, the governments of British Columbia and Canada have yet to commit to providing the long-term core funding this work requires. With the end of the current agreement being March 31, 2025, we need to show our governments this initiative is something that needs to be continued. The link below makes it easy to do this. With no river in good overall condition, it is clear that we need to see much more action at scale and across all areas of our catchments. We need to build and nurture partnerships and, crucially, develop impactful projects across different sectors to help our rivers and catchments recover. The Catchment-based Approach (CaBA) helps us do just that. Yet, a promised increase in funding continues to hang in the balance. A quick update on Buckinghamshire Council's response to the Chiltern Beechwoods SAC. It's inching forward, but isn't quite there yet... - on 16th July the council approved its mitigation strategy. Key features of the strategy are: > Contributions to Strategic Access management and Monitoring Strategy (SAMMS) comprising £566.23 per net additional dwelling in the north and central planning areas and £87.03 in the east planning area. > Provision of Sustainable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG). As in Dacorum, this will be provided either in strategic SANG sites or by larger scale developments providing their own SANG. Projects of 10+ units not providing their own SANG will need to be within the catchment area of Strategic SANG (that isn't the case for smaller sites). > the cost of SANG contribution per unit 'is the subject of further work currently being undertaken' and therefore remains uncertain. - the planning moratorium in the affected area remains in place until a suitable SANG site or sites have been approved. - The council backed site at Kingsbrook is currently awaiting determination, with a determination deadline of 3rd October 2024. https://lnkd.in/eTB5XiA2 So we are still under the planning moratorium within Buckinghamshire Council's area (862 days and counting with no new homes consented in the affected area...) but hopefully the end is in sight.

Planning Resource reports that the size of England’s green belt hasn’t changed much in the last thirty years: in 1998 the total green belt in England was about 1,556,700 ha; between 2003 and 2023, green belt remained between 1,612,980 and 1,668,160 ha the latest government figures show. I have two immediate thoughts on this: Firstly: politically and nimby motivated 'loss of Green Belt' arguments need to be put into this context. Secondly: there must be flexible re-allocation of some Green Belt - e.g. so as to permit housing near public transport hubs, allow facilities such as floodlit artificial grass pitches and other community sports facilities where they are needed, and swop poor quality allocated land for land that better meets the 5 purposes.

Forest of Dean Draft Local Plan Regulation 18 Consultation With an uncanny knack for perfect timing, having just witnessed the Chancellor’s speech on getting Britain building again, The Forest of Dean District Council has launched today its replacement Local Plan  (Reg 18 version). This new consultation focuses on development strategy and specially allocates site new sites for housing and commercial development. It covers the Plan period from 2021 to 2041. 1 - Cinderford, Coleford, Lydney and Newent remain at the top of the settlement hierarchy  2 - The major villages of Tutshill/Sedbury, Bream and Mitcheldean, Drybrook, Newham, Lydbrook and Yorkley/Pillowell/Whitecroft as locations where the new Local Plan will make housing allocations. 3 – In a departure from the previous Plan, the new Plan introduces Large and Small villages, all defined with settlement boundaries. In development terms, proposals are “normally expected to take place” within the defined settlement boundaries. An extract of the Draft Local Plan document is provided below and the deadline for responses is Monday 19 August 2024. Local Plan consultations are critically important as it provides developers and landowners the opportunity to promote sites for development to be considered for inclusion in the new Local Plan being prepared by the Council. The Forest of Dean is a largely rural LPA, where a balance has to be struck between ensuring the continuing vitality of rural communities and the need for sustainable development. Local Plan promotion is a key area of expertise that McLoughlin Planning provides and as a company, we have successfully seen our clients' sites allocated for development. They say that the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago... The next best time is today. Agriculture and Construction might be different industries, but the principle remains the same. Thankfully, NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and Red Deer Polytechnic not only understand this principle, but are acting upon it. Yesterday, NAIT hosted a proactive workshop that brought together academia and industry to address the critical need for trades development, accreditation, and certification within our province. In addition to the esteemed institutions mentioned above, the audience included local contractors, developers, subcontractors, government representatives, and affiliated institutions. The format was superb, and the questions, discussions, answers, and ideas generated will undoubtedly contribute to paving the way for a much-needed solution. We are already experiencing the impact of trade deficits within the construction industry. However, if we do not take action now, by 2030 the repercussions will be severe. The law of supply and demand dictates that wages will spike, and while I support healthy compensation for trades, it will lead to a tipping point where construction costs become prohibitive, causing the industry to grind to a halt. Life and industry are cyclical. We've encountered similar situations in the past, and there's no need to repeat them.
