I actually like watching the 6 o’clock TV3 news/Newshub in the evening….. I like the anchors, and I like their style. But, I do have to admit that by the time that news airs, I pretty much know all of the stories already. The world has changed regarding where and how we access information and news. This all makes me think of the fact that I don’t walk down to the Blockbuster and rent DVDs anymore. Why I don’t own a digital camera. Why I don’t ever carry cash. Why I don’t have a landline at home. I could go on and on… This next decade will be full of disruptive technology. It’s called ‘disruptive’ because it’s ‘disrupting’ our very lives. We change and evolve or we get left behind. We won’t recognise travel, finance, investing, energy, labour, etc by the 2030s. Like Raoul Pal said: “If the robots are coming for our jobs, invest in the bloody robots!”….. If any of this scares you - and I think of Bitcoin as an example (that’s just one of many disruptive areas) - LEARN about it - then educate yourself - then position yourself accordingly. Before 2020 creators from independent artists to restaurant chefs built their businesses by creating core communities and customer base. Around 2020 Facebook introduced algorithm-controlled ratings. This essentially killed the "followers principle" by making the niche content invisible and buried under mindless noise. TikTok pushed the boundaries further by choosing content for each individual viewer which is presently followed by almost all content platforms from Netflix to YouTube. In his passionate speech the CEO of Patreon Jack Conte is talking about how the creative industry is pushing back by developing technologies which help to reconnect creators and communities. It's great to learn about emerging alternatives to the overpowering AI algorithms which control our daily lives and choices.

This is the best thing I've watched this week. Here are three reasons you should watch it. 1️⃣ I love that he's not black and white. It's been a week where Scott Galloway annoyed a lot of marketers by doubling down on his claim that 'The Era of Brand is Dead' on the Uncensored CMO podcast. People were quick to point out the exceptions to Prof G's claim. But can you blame the man? Aren't click-bait claims just a necessary evil in 2024 if you want to get noticed? Well, not according to Jack Conte. It's refreshing to watch him manage to give a muscular speech full of certainty and conviction without having to resort to click-bait or over simplifications. Mark Ritson famously advocates for 'bothism', and Conte embodies bothism in this speech. He points out that there's still a role for reach-based social platforms. He's not suggesting that it's either/or. He just believes there's a case for an alternative (skip to 26:58 for that bit). 2️⃣ I love that it's real. Keynote speeches can be sterile - points you've cobbled together. But occasionally a keynote speech can feel like somebody's life spilling out on stage, but with a cohesive story underpinning it. This is one of those. He shares endless photos from his journey as a struggling musician and content creator, and gets a round of applause when he describes getting 40 people to a gig. The musicians in the audience get it. Real recognize real. 3️⃣ I love that it makes sense, even just a little bit, of the dull, sameification of the world that we're all living through. Whether you call it 'sea of sameness' (ironically, we all seem to use that phrase now) or something else, most of us have observed how dull things have become. Adam Morgan has a slide where he shows the colour of cars over the years. We used to buy cars in a range of colours; now it's almost exclusively black, silver or grey. What I love about this speech is that it explains why this sameification is not an accident. Creative people have not become less creative. And social media users haven't changed in any meaningful way. All that's happened is algorithmically driven companies have got better at predicting the quick fixes that will get engagement, and then reinforced the feedback loop. Mental fast food which we salivate over with our thumbs, even if only for a second. If we want to get off the blandwagon (h/t to my colleague Toby Brown for that marvellous pun), we're going to need to understand that the opponent is not chance; the opponent is a collection of the most successful companies in the history of the human race. He ends with a great message: "Don't let somebody else tell you what you want. Because then you'll end up with what *they* want, instead of what *you* want."
