Advertising has become too serious too much of the time. But it doesn’t need to be that way… Gymshark are a great example of a brand whilst nailing its daily media needs to build a brand and compete with the behemoths of adidas, Nike, and Puma along with the up and coming brands such as NOBULL & On it also makes time to bring levity and moments of joy to consumers. These moments of joy may have a small immediate media footprint (compared to a GRP) but the owned and earned potential from their fan base, who have bought into the brand for exactly this reason, has far greater potential Ben & Noel & the great minds at Gymshark know the value in connecting directly with your audience. Living out their mission purposefully. Building a community. Creating a movement. They challenge the advertising status quo and consistently test and try our new creative ways of better connecting with their consumers. Not beholden to TV and traditional ways we consider media. This is why I love their work. This is why their revenues grew +20% YOY in 2022, with their growth continuing to outpace the category!

Let's take a note from some of the top creative advertising, shall we? Ever since Mischief announced their new partnership with Pizza Hut, I've been so pumped to see what would be coming down the pipe for this brand. LO AND BEHOLD... The partnership just launched "Goodbye Pies" just in time for Valentines Day. And quite honestly, while the idea is super creative, it's the insight that made it for me. Here's a peek into how Marketing Dive described it: Though Valentine’s Day is often regarded as a romance frenzy, the day is actually riddled with heartbreak. Forty-five percent of people agree it’s better to call it quits on a relationship ahead of the holiday, according to data cited in release details. In fact, the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day — which is when Pizza Hut’s campaign launched — is known as “Red Tuesday” for being the day people break up most often in the year. So I can imagine, the brief looked something like this: Get: Relationship bound folks who know they want to break up with their partners before Valentines Day To: Realize they can avoid that awkward conversation By: Letting Pizza Hut do the dirty work for them and let their partner down gently This is the stuff that lights me up as a strategist! I truly hope that all the folks advocating AGAINST criticism of Super Bowl ads, and FOR kindness toward the creative teams behind it also carry that forward in their day-to-day lives in every possible situation, even when they don't like something. This is not an anti-kindness message. It's a message to remind folks in our industry that we don't just get to center kindness *only* when we're the ones in the line of fire. These are fairly cush jobs in comparison to lots of work that people have every day, and it would be wildly unfair to demand kindness over critique from others, as well as a deep understanding of work that goes into the finished product, and not hold ourselves to the same exact standard when interacting with: ➡Marketing materials outside our medium we don't like (or genuinely hate) ➡Standing in line at the DMV ➡Sitting on hold with customer service when our internet is down ➡Receiving cold food at a restaurant that is backed up ➡Waiting for a bartender to take our drink order ➡Dealing with construction on the road home ➡Waiting for a response from a hiring manager we interviewed with ➡Being blocked on a task at work with our boss or client as a bottleneck ➡A flight stuck on the tarmac delayed for takeoff ➡Myriad endless other human-to-human or human-to-technology interactions that happen every single day The other requirement: You don't get to choose kindness ONLY when you have what you feel is a complete picture of the situation - it has to be at ALL times. Because if what you're saying is, "You don't know how hard people work and how much work goes into a Super Bowl spot" (and I DO know, I've worked on these campaigns), then what you should also be telling yourself is, "I don't know how hard this person in front of me is working and I don't know what I'm not seeing." Look, I'm all for kindness. But I'm also all for honesty. So before we lecture others, let's self-reflect and remember that criticism is human nature - fix the issue in ourselves before we demand it in return from the rest of humanity. #advertising #superbowl #superbowlcommercials #marketing #creative
