AJ wanted to pursue his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), but he wasn’t sure where to start. After a stint in prison, that journey became even harder. But after accepting a truck driver position at Goodwill, he realized his goal was in reach. He took part in our Work & Learn program, which allows employees to pursue educational opportunities while earning a paycheck. Now, after just over a year at Goodwill, AJ has earned his CDL and accepted his "dream" job. “Without Goodwill, none of this would be possible,” he said. “There was no way I could have paid for CDL school on my own. This has been my dream for the longest. … I just needed someone to believe in me. And that’s where Jordan and Goodwill came in.” Read AJ’s story here: https://shorturl.at/9Q1E8

I would like to hear the thoughts of those in the transportation industry.
The FMSCA says only 113 motor carriers have applied for its under-21 truck driver apprenticeship program since July 2022, a dismal sign for an initiative that had been expected to recruit up to 1,000 carriers and 3,000 drivers. https://lnkd.in/djgpFrvi

📰 This week the FMCSA released stats on applications and rejections for the Under-21 Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program. I was surprised by how few applications were received (113) and how few were accepted - only 34 applications, or 30%, were accepted. 🧒 👧 Though in the current market, drivers are not as hard to come by, generating opportunities for young drivers should still be a priority. However, the lack of applications seems to indicate otherwise. I am intrigued to learn more about what is behind these figures. Is it driven by the current market 📉 , the safety restrictions imposed by insurers 📜 , the lack of interest from younger generations 😴 or a combination? Would love to get my trucking network's though on this. #driverrecruiting #driverretention #trucking #transportation #drivershortage #DoubleNickel https://lnkd.in/eiM2PPgw

My first job: Working at the local zoo. I was in high school. It was about a 30 minute drive from my house. I went to this zoo several times growing up...once got bit by a small pony (to be fair...I had it coming. I wasn't being very nice). Then a few years later got a job working there. Funny. I worked 50-80 hours/week, making $3.05/hour. They paid me about $180 a week so $720 a month. I remember thinking this is amazing. But I really didn't like getting up at 5:30 in the morning in order to get there on time & start my work day. But looking back the biggest lesson I learned: Earning money for doing something. Even if it’s something I don’t like. What a noble concept! That was my first experience of earning money and it definitely wasn't the most satisfying thing I've ever done. However..... I enjoyed the paycheck way MORE than I hated the job. Anyway, what was your first job? #trucking #firstjobs #growingup #driverrecruiting

Something to think about: The author supports making truck driving a Red Seal occupation in Canada, which would set national standards for skills and knowledge in the profession. Here's a summary of the text in 7 bullet points: Alberta has announced an apprenticeship-style model for truck drivers to be implemented soon. A poll of 77 industry professionals showed unanimous support for an apprenticeship program for truck driving and agreement that it would improve road safety. Surprisingly, 88% of respondents didn't think an apprenticeship model would significantly reduce the number of Driver Inc. carriers. Benefits of recognizing truck driving as a skilled trade include attracting better candidates, reducing turnover, increasing respect for the profession, and improving safety. Challenges to implementing this change include industry fragmentation and potential resistance from gig carriers due to increased costs. The Professional Truck Training Alliance of Canada (PTTAC) is working to make truck driving a Red Seal trade, with widespread support from the industry.
