Today, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA). Signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, the ADA vigorously protects the civil rights of people with disabilities by criminalizing discrimination based on a disability and guaranteeing equal access to public buildings and businesses, employment opportunities, transportation, telecommunications, commercial facilities, and state and local government services, according to the United States Census Bureau. Did you know that in 2022, there were 44.1 million noninstitutionalized Americans with a disability? There's another Independence Day that we celebrate: July 26th. Thirty-four years ago, a second Independence Day was established on July 26. National Disability Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which expands the rights and prohibits discrimination of the disabled community. Even with the passing of the ADA, many people with disabilities still experience tremendous barriers to employment. Enter Goodwill. At Goodwill of Greater Washington, more than 250 team members have a disability. They are provided competitive wages, access to health and retirement benefits, a Caring Fund to address emergency needs, as well as RISE Coaches to help them navigate resources and systems to remove barriers to achieving success at work and beyond! We're already counting the days until the next Goodwill RISE Awards Celebration! It is truly one of our favorite events of the year. Last month, team members across the Goodwill of Greater Washington nonprofit organization celebrated each other's accomplishments at our annual RISE (Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence) Team breakfast and award ceremony.
