The scenes in Paris have heightened sympathy for Tokyo. The organisers of the #2020OlympicGames faced insurmountable challenges, and when the rescheduled event was held in 2021, the streets were empty, and there was silence at the venues. But in 2024, the threat of COVID was ignored, with crowds in the host city and the cry of “Allez” at the aquatic centre both lasting memories of #Paris2024. #Paris2024 has provided a welcome distraction from mundane life, tragic world events, and the horrific scenes that feature all too often on television news. The Games have been an opportunity to breathe rather than sigh, to shout with joy rather than despair, to embrace and celebrate together. Perhaps, it is a response to the decision by the IOC to add ‘Together’ to the Olympic motto of ‘Higher, Faster, Stronger’. Or, perhaps the atmosphere that has permeated Paris follows initiatives taken by the organisers of the Paris Games. The seating layout at the Aquatic Centre allowed competitors to embrace family and friends after completing their races and the Champions Park beneath the Eiffel Tower was the place where medal winners could party with spectators within touching distance of their newly-minted heroes. It is hoped that #LosAngeles2028 and #Brisbane2032 will find other ways to enhance the joyful sharing. The opening ceremony was 'Seine-sational'! It broke free, quite literally! From the confinements of the stadium. The iconic river became a spectacle for the fans. With athletes parading on boats along its waters. With the entirety of Paris being lit up, it was the first time in Olympic history that an opening ceremony was a non-stadium affair. In addition, there are a couple of other interesting facts about the Paris Games. So folks, Let's take a dip: 1). Paris enters an elite club: As the games were declared wide open yesterday, the city became only the second in the history of the mega event to host the Games thrice after London (1908, 1948, 2012). Previously, Paris hosted the Summer Olympics in 1900 and 1924. 2). The mascot is a hat??: Wait, what??? Yes! You heard it right. Unlike an animal or a human figure used as an official mascot, the French did the unusual and the most French thing by unveiling Phryges (pronounced as Free-jes). By the looks, it is a small red conical hat with a curved tip, but culturally for the French people, the hat is a symbol of revolution, liberation and freedom. These hats are visible on French coins and stamps. 3). Medallists to take a piece of the Eiffel?: Yes! It is true. Each medal will contain a piece of iron (18 gms) from the Eiffel Tower renovation scraps. And that piece of Paris' most iconic landmark will be included in the heart of both the Olympic and the Paralympic medals. #olympics #paris2024 #parisolympics #paris2024openingceremony

Could the result of the Paris Olympic Opening have been better? I’ve been reflecting on the opening ceremony, and the industry's reaction to it has been pretty intense. This is my first chance to share my thoughts after connect with those outside the industry bubble. Most people I've talked to outside the industry seemed to enjoy the opening, despite the obvious feedback that it was “a little bit long”—something we've heard about almost every opening ceremony in the past. However, industry experts have been more critical, pointing fingers at the organisers for not having better weather contingencies, poor treatment of athletes stuck on the boats, boring and lack of engagement etc. What truly baffled me was how Paris chose to represent itself to the world. Gaga on the steps and the Moulin Rouge segments felt culturally empty and I absolutely agree, simple measures like covering key camera areas could have made a big difference without much hassle for organisers. It's really no excuse to not have wet weather contingencies these days. But! And this is a big but... One thing is certain: the Paris opening has broken the mould for Olympic ceremonies. It was a bold move to step out of the stadium and away from the finely tuned, glitzy tradition (whether they meant it or not). This has clearly shaken things up for future openings, and rightly so. TV viewership for the games is dropping significantly, signaling that the golden era of all-consuming games openings might be over. Could the result of the Paris opening have been better? Absolutely. It did seem like they bit off more than they could chew, trying to cover the sprawling city. But what’s exciting is the creative license now passed onto LA and Brisbane for their upcoming ceremonies. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ll reinvent the experience, and would delight in the chance to be involved as the potential now seems open-ended. Like most people, we watched in awe as the blazing Paris Olympic cauldron rose magnificently into the sky this past weekend. Rooted in the rich history of the Games, the cauldron pays homage to thousands of years of mythology and all who have competed under it since. However, this year’s cauldron has a secret! The Olympic flame burning bright in the night sky does not actually burn at all. The innovative cauldron is a clever optical illusion powered by 40 LEDs and water mist. It is the most sustainable Olympic cauldron ever, and importantly, it does not compromise on the symbolism and impact the cauldron must have. The floating Paris cauldron beautifully blends respect for the past with the excitement of modern innovation. Its elegant form and creativity symbolise the potential of progress through thoughtful evolution. It reflects a world where traditions are not discarded but enhanced through creative solutions. At Fressko, this harmonious blend of old and new struck a chord with us; it has always been core to the way we approach product design. “We don’t want to reinvent the wheel, we just want to make a better wheel.” It’s a quote that gets thrown around HQ often, and the cauldron reminded us why it’s so important to remember; our products embody the balance between maintaining reliable, time-tested concepts and advancing them with modern technology and sustainable practices. The pursuit of better has no end. As we look to the future, we celebrate creativity like the Paris Olympic cauldron as a beacon of how respecting the past can illuminate new paths to innovative, sustainable progress. Forward. Forever.
