We've worked with Artist-founded, artistry-driven beauty brands for over a decade. That time has included many hours backstage at Fashion Week interviewing Artists and documenting techniques, shades, and steps—and naming and mythologizing the trends of the season. We've spun that storytelling into thick printed trend books, lauding press releases, how-tos that translate backstage to everyday, miles of recaps and reports. The best part of doing this for the legendary Pat McGrath, during our years with PAT McGRATH LABS, was documenting the story behind the look. Weaving in details from the miles of archive references she pulled from; spotlighting anecdotes from her irreverent, incomparable ode to the furthest reaches of culture; describing her technical prowess with illustrative twists that embodied the flair of her artistry. Last week at Margiela—which has everyone from elite makeup artists to TikTok acolytes falling all over themselves trying to uncover the secret behind her porcelain doll, peel-off skin—she broke the beauty algorithm with an impossible-to-recreate look that has people genuinely invigorated, creatively inspired, aghast. Pat does not serve us table stakes and expect us to fall in line; she breaks our brains and pushes for possibility. She rejects ease in service of doing the most. She cuts no creative corners. At Antonym, we honor an internal review process and the list of steps we check off before work is deemed client-ready. The first one is "Interrogate Brief." This step reminds us that there is always more to draw from the task at hand—another territory in which to push, an opportunity to over-deliver. A question that hasn't been asked (there always is). To think beyond and deliver beyond.
