Asbestos, a once-heralded miracle mineral for its fire-resistant properties, has left a devastating legacy of disease and death. Despite knowing the dangers for decades, the United States has been shockingly slow in implementing comprehensive asbestos regulations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s recent ban on chrysotile asbestos, the last form of asbestos used in the United States, marks a significant milestone, yet it highlights decades of industrial and political resistance. Understanding the complexities surrounding asbestos regulations and the influence of corporations and lobby groups provides insight into this complex and prolonged battle. Springs: Surface or Groundwater Environmental lawyers rely on consultants, such as hydrogeologists, to assist in solving client issues. However, the relationship between scientists and lawyers requires an exchange of expertise. While lawyers cannot perform isotopic testing of groundwater, we can use the information to better represent our clients. I co-authored an article on the relationship between surface and groundwater and how Oregon Health Authority regulates water utilities reliant on springs. These regulations are particularly interesting as significant field work is required to determine whether a spring is groundwater or groundwater under the direct influence of surface water. https://lnkd.in/gDiguUpg
