Brit students here for cultural exchange A dozen students from London's SV Academy are here for a two-week cultural immersion programme, aimed at broadening their horizons through experiences with traditions including steel pan music. Now in its third year, the UK Department of Education-funded initiative focuses on students aged 14 to 16 who face challenges in mainstream education. This year marks the first collaboration with the National Peace Programme, championed by Minister of State in the Office of the Attorney General with responsibility for Crime Prevention, Corey Lane. At a meet-and-greet ceremony at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment's Haggatt Hall offices, Lane emphasised the importance of youth involvement in addressing global issues. "There is a phenomenon that we are having across the Caribbean and the world, in relation to climate change, youth employment, crime and violence, and the absence of the youth voice spells a disaster," he said. He encouraged the visiting students to engage actively with their Barbadian peers, including members of the Barbados Youth Parliament, to share ideas and cultures. Orlando Clement, Principal of SV Academy, explained that the school works with young people with dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, who have difficulties in mainstream settings, or those at risk of being drawn into gangs and drugs. Sonia Ramanah, the academy's director and safeguarding officer, outlined the programme's focus: "We raise aspirations for all young people and inspire them predominantly through music and media. Every year, we put together a special programme which we call Music Bridges Culture, which brings together young people from London and young people from the Caribbean." The students' itinerary includes workshops with the National Peace Programme, visits to schools and youth groups, and cultural excursions such as a trip to the Oistins Fish Fry and a tour of the island. Collaboration with the island's institutions has been key to the programme's success. "This year, we've been working with St Leonard's Boys School, and they're amazing. Our students go there, and pretty much become students. They're learning how to play the steel pan, how to cook Bajan cuisine," Clement noted. "These are all amazing things that they would never have an opportunity to do in the UK, and a lot of them are saying to me that they don't want to go back. So we're going to have a problem when we get to the airport," the principal added. As the programme continues to evolve, organisers hope to reciprocate by hosting Barbadian students in the UK in the future, further strengthening cultural ties between the two nations. 🍎 For anyone moving abroad and raising their children in a culture different from their own, school can be a major source of culture clash. We naturally compare the education our children receive to our own, which is rarely the same 👨🏫 You could send your child to the very same school that you attended and find that curriculums, teaching methods, and faculty members change over time. Imagine navigating that in a new country, culture, and language! 🎙 This week Michael sat down with two international parents living in Copenhagen who are learning about the Danish school system as foreigners in Denmark. Both Adrian Mackinder and Annie Samples are figuring out the differences between Danish schools and British and American schools respectively 😮 They were incredibly open and candid while sharing their experiences and the adjustments that they’ve made as parents in Denmark who were raised and educated in other countries. One of the biggest differences, which they both pointed out, is that the academic focus in Danish schools occurs on a different timeline. The early grades are focused on behaviour and pastoral skills - the “reading, writing, and arithmetic” comes later 📚 For Adrian and Annie, this is very different than their own education and the children of their friends back home. They both stress that no country does it right or wrong, only different. They know that students in Denmark aren’t at a deficit or disadvantage for starting the focus on academic instruction later. They also point out that their friends back home may have kids who read earlier, but their children have advanced language skills from living bilingual lives and having multiple cultural influences at home 🌍 For some internationals moving to Denmark to work temporarily, it’s important to understand how the education system may be different in Denmark. A later focus on reading may present challenges if their child is moved to another education system and assessed for reading levels in another country 📖 Both guests prefer having their children enrolled in Danish schools over international schools for various reasons like the cultural immersion and their family’s long-term outlook. Attending an international school can mean classmates relocating during the school year which can be a social challenge. ➡️ You can hear more from Adrian and Annie in our latest YT video and on episodes of What Are You Doing in Denmark streaming now with more to come. 🤔💭 What are your thoughts and experiences on enrolling your children in schools abroad or living abroad during your own education? #expatindenmark #expatlife #livingindenmark #danishschool #livingabroad #expatparents

Chief Executive at UK Youth 🔐 | Systemic Change | Youth | Social Justice | Board Non Executive Director | Charity Trustee | Eph 3:14-21🙏🏾
📢 I'm excited to be appointed onto this expert panel, overseeing the development of an innovative plan to redefine the landscape of cultural education for our #youth. Our strategic priorities at UK Youth include working to drive cross-sector problem-solving and amplifying the critical role of youth work in empowering all young people to thrive. It's my goal to ensure that this plan looks beyond the School walls and embraces a wider diversity of expertise. By collaborating with professionals across different sectors, we can identify, amplify and scale provision in order to equalize cultural education opportunities for all young people, regardless of their background or location. This plan seeks to go beyond the national curriculum and examination frameworks; it focuses on spreading best practices, helping young people, parent/carer and professionals to navigate the system and ensuring that every child and young person has access to enriching cultural experiences. This is an important opportunity to spotlight the critical role of #youthwork in cultural education. Youth work empowers young people, fosters their creativity, and nurtures their personal growth. By amplifying this role within the cultural education plan, we can elevate the recognition and support for the youth sector. ⁉️Now, here's where I'd love to hear your thoughts! ❔What specific areas within cultural education do you believe should be the top focus for the expert panel? ❔Are there any topics or activities that you think require particular attention? Please share your insights and help me make this work, a system changing plan for our youth. 🙏🏾 #Unlockingyouthwork #CulturalEducation #SystemChange #YouthEmpowerment #CrossSectorCollaboration
