HASC added a second #VirginiaClass #submarine in their draft of the Fiscal Year 2025 defense policy bill, a departure from the Biden administration’s decision to ask for only one sub. The $849.8 billion draft defense policy bill also cuts ten F-35s and the Constellation-class frigate program. What should feel like a sobering and galvanising piece by Kim Beazley, one of our universally revered defence stalwarts, for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. If he can’t influence this government, who can? And the previous government (and those before and before) do not get off the hook either. We simply MUST resource our forces. All of them. Navy, Airforce, Army and Space. Resource ALL OF OUR ASSETS (deliberate use of shouty capitals). Resource in the full definition of the word- with dollars, and FTE, and focus, and openness, and curiosity, and a sense of criticality. This is not a drill! Get the budget fixed. A big push now, to claw back the ad hoc erosion of $$, and an ongoing commitment to sustaining our needs. You won’t solve the staffing issue by asking the old legends of the force. (I am sure they will admit they are part of the problem…) Ask around externally, ask the potential recruits what they want. Ask the mining industry - if they can attract staff to go to remote locations and do difficult work, with a creative approach to workforce planning, then the forces can too. The whole government must get behind this in a nonpartisan, purposeful and mature way. Do the work. Draw a line in the sand. Decide, as a whole, that “we will resource our forces: genuinely, and with deep and lasting respect for how they protect our way of life”. https://lnkd.in/gF2Qq92H
