One of the most popular Microcontrollers series, STM32, is going to be in Samsung Semiconductor's 18nm FD-SOI, featuring Arm's Cortex-M core, suited for ML(Machine Learning) & DSP (Digital Signal Processing) applications. It is planned to reach selected customer in 2nd half of 2024, by STMicroelectronics (ST) Apart from the power & performance advantages, ST chose the process, with enhanced high-temperature operation, radiation-hardened characteristics and data retention capabilities, to deliver the reliability sought by industrial applications. Another critical change done by ST is the Embedded phase-change memory (ePCM). It offers 50% improved performance to power ration and 2.5 times on chip memory compared to the embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) of the current generation. This again iterates my belief, to go with 16nm to 18nm Fabs rather than cutting or bleeding edge ones for countries venturing into Fab like India. At the same time, going above 18nm also has its own limitations, as we can miss out on few advantages in making high compute devices. #STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) introducing an advanced process based on 18nm FD-SOI technology with embedded phase change memory (ePCM), co-developed by ST and #Samsung Foundry. The first next-generation STM32 microcontroller based on the new technology will start sampling to selected customers in the second half of 2024, with production planned for the second half of 2025.
