A day before this story came out, I was talking to a friend about narrative identity – the internalised story of the self that we construct to make sense and meaning out of our life. I'm a firm believer that stories are society's basic building blocks. Not just in the ways we connect with or understand others, but the core stories we believe about ourselves end up shaping our lives. If you believe you are X trait or embody X value, you'll likely do X-related behaviours and achieve X-related outcomes. And similarly, you are more likely to peg certain events to X trait/value to make sense of life. Narrative identity is evolving and malleable tho. The stories we tell ourselves can be rewritten – for better or worse. For instance, you might shift your core belief that you're "undeserving of success", if external opportunities and support come together to shape a new narrative. But if you're born into a certain environment, with a limited amount of privilege (which includes access to whatever help you need), it is not only harder to fundamentally change your sense of self and future, but to *believe* in that possibility. When I first heard Chengying Cai speak months ago, I thought she was such a natural storyteller for Pro Bono SG's mission and their clients' journeys. But when I met her recently, I realised she could also tell her own story with equal clarity – the sort I tend to see in interviewees who've found their purpose, sometimes without realising it. All I had to do was the simple task of elevating her work, if only to help just one person in need dream a little differently and rewrite their story.

Bringing legal help closer to the community | Head of Strategy & Impact Evaluation at Pro Bono SG

Thank you Grace Yeoh for penning this incredible article on my journey with Pro Bono SG. The path has been challenging, sometimes lonely and I've even wondered whether it makes more sense to just walk away. However, reading Grace's article, I realised that without really paying attention, Pro Bono SG has been the constant in my professional journey in the past decade and that I am the better for it. Grateful to those who have reached out to express support and am so glad that the access to justice mission resonates with a wider community, beyond the legal profession. #probonosg #accesstojustice #community

Oh yes Chengying Cai is a natural storyteller, she walks with her clients and actually care about their stories. She would totally nail the job of a tour guide too! Did you get a “temple heritage tour” from her? 😅

So cool, I just had the exact conversation with someone. Our narrative is our script and shapes everything in life
