Been sitting on this story idea for almost a year, admittedly partly because I was dreading having to go clubbing again. I didn’t really want to write about Culture SG’s supposedly “different” parties without experiencing them myself. But my hazy clubbing experiences have been just … bad. I am always on high alert, ready to punch any creep. (Amazing that I have not had to do so.) And the unnecessary amount spent on alcohol to block out the excessive social posturing (similar to being on LinkedIn HA) and enjoy not-so-great music. And the post-clubbing regret for succumbing to peer pressure when I check my bank balance the next day. And yet. And yet. When the music is verrrrrry occasionally terrific, when I find likeminded strangers on the dance floor, when I am able to get into it totally sober, the freeing feeling is quite unparalleled. Sure, perhaps I speak from a music lover / former dancer’s POV. But I want this feeling to be accessible by anyone – even if (especially if) the usual clubbing scene isn’t your thing. Someone commented on Culture SG’s Instagram post where they explained their vision to change the clubbing scene that “it’s not that deep”. And I just want to call out this bullshit elitist mentality that implies anyone not in politics or social work or some “””meaningful””” job is doing less important work. You don’t easily forget the first time you finally feel comfortable, welcomed, and safe enough to fully be yourself in a space you usually feel outcast. It doesn’t even have to be on a dance floor or in a club – but I can promise, as someone who's experienced very little of this feeling in life, it is that deep.

Grace Yeoh agreed. I admire what Ash and the team at Culture are doing, and I'm thrilled to see their efforts to refresh and reframe the perspective on nightlife being spotlighted. It's a refreshing change.
