#Caregiving over a long-distance presents numerous challenges, both logistical and emotional. Nearly 6 million Americans find themselves in this role, often feeling overwhelmed by the distance separating them from their loved ones in need. At #STHC, we know that as the population ages and becomes more geographically mobile, the need for innovative solutions to support caregiving continues to grow. In USA TODAY’s recent article, Alyssa Weakley, a neuropsychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, shares her experience with her grandmother's #Alzheimers diagnosis. Davis, who specializes in technology for cognitively impaired older adults, developed a platform called Interactive Care (I-Care), which aims to help caregivers manage tasks remotely. Technology plays a significant role in easing the burden of long-distance caregiving. It is crucial that caregivers have access to platforms like #ICare in order to ensure quality #HomeHealthCare and #HealthcareAccess. However, other resources can provide similar assistance. Zoom calls, for example, enable virtual attendance at doctor appointments, while online bill paying, and grocery ordering provide practical assistance from miles away. Despite these challenges, caregivers must prioritize #selfcare. As caregivers, we know the struggle of balancing financial pressures while ensuring our little ones receive the best care. That's why the recent announcement from Ontario's Ministry of Education is such a game-changer. Starting in 2025, a new cost-based funding formula for the $10-a-day child-care program will be implemented, providing much-needed financial stability for child-care centres across the province. 🌟 This initiative is set to cover the actual costs of child care, addressing the critical issues that have put many centers at risk of closure. By ensuring that funding reflects the true expenses of running these programs, from staffing to supplies, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that affordable, high-quality child care is here to stay. 🙌 Minister Stephen Lecce emphasized the goal of providing certainty to operators, and this move is a testament to that commitment. Women often take the lead in caregiving duties. This is usually due to family or societal norms and expectations. However, men are increasingly finding themselves taking care of aging parent or ill spouse and their experiences can be different to those of women. Per AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving there were approximately 18.7 million men caring for adults in 2020 up from 16 million in 2015. When looking at gender, daughters still outpaced sons as caregivers in 202O per the same study, but men made up 39% of caregivers, increasing from 27% in 1997. What is an example of a challenge men may face as caregivers? Imagine a son having to help his mother with with incontinence, bathing or other personal hygiene needs. It can be an unfamiliar place for anyone, but may be more uncomfortable for men due to traditional gender norms. A 2019 study in the journal Healthcare found that men who were caregivers had weak support networks and sought out help from programs that could help them with caregiving less than others. Caregiving is a universal issue that affects all people regardless of gender. Male caregivers need targeted services such as peer support groups and training for personal care and medical tasks. Caring for Our Aging Population: The Role of Bridge to Care Canada is getting older. Fourteen percent of the population is above the age of 65, and by 2036, that number is projected to increase to 25 percent. As hospital stays get shorter, home care is being touted as an efficient alternative. Caregiving is a growing issue, and Bridge to Care has been established to meet these increasing needs. Our Mission: 1.Raise Awareness: Increase public support for caregivers, their issues, and Bridge to Care. 2.Provide Programs: Offer information, education, support, networking, and advocacy for individual caregivers. 3.Influence Change: Advocate for systemic changes to recognize and address caregivers' needs. 4.Expand Reach: Support communities and caregivers throughout Canada. 5.Ensure Sustainability: Grow and sustain Bridge to Care's relevance and effectiveness. Understanding Caregiving: A caregiver assists a family member or friend with challenges resulting from illness, disability, or aging. They can be: 1.A family member of someone with a brain injury, mental illness, or addiction. 2.The spouse of someone with heart disease, MS, Parkinson's, ALS, arthritis, or dementia. 3.The parent of a child with high needs or a disability. 4.The adult child of aging parents needing help with appointments, home maintenance, and finances. 5.The main person checking in on a neighbor or friend because “there is no one else.” Caregivers are essential, with more than 8 million caregivers in Canada—more than 1 in 4 adults. Replacing all the care they provide would cost $66 billion per year. However, caregiving comes at a cost, with higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression, increased risk of burnout, and financial and employment impacts. Join Us: As a society, we need caregivers. As care needs grow, we rely on them to fill the gaps. But caregivers can’t do it without support and recognition from the government, the system, and the community. Recognizing changes in our aging loved ones can be a sensitive matter, but it's important to approach it with care and compassion. Using the acronym C.A.R.E., we can gently assess if they might need a helping hand: 1. CUES: Keep an eye out for any changes in appearance, hygiene, or how they maintain their home. These changes might signal a need for support, and offering a helping hand can make a world of difference to their well-being. 2. ASSISTANCE: Notice if they require assistance with daily tasks or mobility. Sometimes, simple tasks like grocery shopping or cleaning can become challenging, and lending a hand can ease their load. 3. RESPONSIVENESS: Changes in memory or communication can be concerning. If you notice them repeating themselves or struggling with tasks they used to manage easily, it might be time to offer extra support and understanding. 4. ENGAGEMENT: Loneliness and social isolation can take a toll on their health and happiness. Encourage social interactions and make sure they're not spending too much time alone.
