It is becoming clear(er) that broadcast TV is emerging as the favored *2nd* window for high-quality scripted fare (see previously: CBS network run of "Yellowstone"), after first bowing (and viewer data-analyzed) via SVOD streaming. And the exact *opposite* approach (i.e., broadcast-first, then library-available via streaming) for lesser-cost/quality genres like reality/game show/competition that now dominate the live/linear broadcast network prime daypart. This is a fascinating look at how streaming TV is beginning to mirror traditional (aka linear and ad supported) TV. "Traditional TV isn't dying, we're watching it in our millions The success of primetime TV shows like Gladiators, The Traitors, and Mr Bates prove that streaming hasn't won the war with traditional linear TV yet" --- Something strange is happening with old-fashioned linear TV: we’re watching it in our droves. Six million Brits tuned into BBC One to watch the first episodes of Gladiators, the physically-demanding show where athletes dangle from the ceiling and you, at home — regardless of your physical ability — think: "Yeah, I could do that." Some 5.5 million people – with a peak of 6.9 million viewers – watched the final dramatic moments of The Traitors (poor Mollie), with pubs across the country airing viewing parties; one gay bar selling fizzy pink rosé in honour of our favourite contestant, Diane. But it’s not just lycra and fizzy rosé drawing people to live television: it is also happening with drama too. Around 3.5 million people tuned into each episode of Mr Bates vs The Post Office on ITV1, even though all episodes were available to watch on their own streaming service ITVX. The ghosts of old shows are the scariest things on TV Late at night, the only sounds are your fridge and the laughter from old sitcoms like "The King of Queens" on TV. These shows take us back but also show how much TV has changed. Nowadays, cable channels are losing viewers fast. Big names like MTV, USA Network, and AMC have seen their audience numbers drop sharply. Even Disney Channel's viewership has fallen dramatically. Once, over 100 million homes had cable. Now, it's around 70 million. People aren't watching cable as much because there's less new stuff to watch, and streaming services have taken over. In fact, most people now choose streaming first over cable. But it's not all doom and gloom. Some channels are finding new ways to survive by getting on board with streaming. Shows like FX’s “The Bear” on Hulu and Bravo’s hits on Peacock are finding new audiences online. And the Hallmark Channel? It's actually getting more viewers than before. So, we're at a weird crossroads where we might need cable and several streaming subscriptions to watch everything we want. It's a big change from the old days of TV. When I first saw #streamingmedia starting to become mainstream, I thought that there would be so much content coming online that it would become a burden for consumers to find what they want to watch. I also thought that whoever could come up with an effective "guide" would have an advantage in the market. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Releases Early In France: AmiMoJo writes: In a major surprise, all twenty episodes of the second season of the animated series 'Star Trek: Prodigy' have suddenly been made available in France thanks to broadcaster France Televisions. According to TrekCentral it seems France.TV, the online streaming service for the national public broadcaster, has released the entirety of the second season all at once and without any prior warning or announcement. This has led to questions online as to how this happened. Paramount+ unexpectedly canceled the series in June last year -- even as a second season had almost finished production and was completed shortly after. It took numerous fan campaigns and social media protests but ultimately Netflix picked up both completed seasons in October 2023. The streamer has confirmed the twenty episode second season will arrive this year but hasn't set a specific date as yet. Today's unexpected release in France has many wondering if this a mistake, or is this the result of a specific licensing deal with that country and distributor. Either way, spoilers for the new season are already flooding online along with a lot of people calling for fans to wait for the official release and support the creators.
