There's always a pendulum swing between exploration and exploitation. This makes sense, particularly for public companies focused on earnings given rate increases. That said, it's not typically the path to create the franchises of the future (also, side note, I just found out there were 6 Sharknados. . .). Many are suggesting platforms less tethered to the Studios/Hollywood ecosystem (e.g. Social/YouTube) will win in this environment and with integrated commerce and less friction to sharing / co-creation, it's not hard to see why the more social platforms continue to gain attention share.

For most of this century, TV has offered writers an alternative to franchise-obsessed movie studios. HBO, Showtime, FX and AMC funded original ideas from talented writers, ushering in the golden age of TV. Then Netflix and Amazon came and spent even more money on new ideas; hence, peak TV. But the streaming business is maturing and companies are seeking profit. As they pay more attention to how much they spend -- and what they spend it on -- they are turning to reliable franchises. Every hit show now gets a sequel, prequel or spinoff. Countless past hits are being rebooted. 93 days ago, with little fanfare, less than a shoestring budget (I turned down every one of the 11 investment offers I had gotten ... finding money is not the hard part ... find the right money, is a full time job), and a brilliant (as determined by me) plan, 2-13.tv launched. 213 TV. A video streaming B2B marketplace, that was a win-win-win for streaming services, viewers and most important to me, filmmakers. Genius (yeah, still me). Since then, about a dozen things have not gone according to plan, two things didn't work at all, I learned a bit more about people than I had expected, and we got to ~25,000 views of our content (trailers, shorts, film-isodes, promos). That was all for context. The point? As I continue to share tales from the front lines whilst very publicly building this thingamajig, I point this post in the direction of those out there who are deciding when to launch your idea into some form of reality. The answer is now. You can sit in a parked car, and steer all you want. You can plan the trip. You can work out the perfect places to stop, etc. But until you get on the road and confront the traffic jam created by the bread truck and the mayonnaise truck colliding and spilling the makings of 75,000 sandwiches onto the roadway (based on a true story, by the way), you'll just be that gal (or ...) who wanted to ... Within the next 18 months, 213 TV is going to become a household name. That would never happen if I was sitting around waiting to come up with the perfect logo (ours sucks, by the way).
