From the podcast archive ... here's my guest appearance on the @nielsen-norman-group podcast where I had an insightful discussion with @tbfessenden about designing a UX career that aligns with your interests, values, and long-term goals. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
🧰 Job titles matter less than skills
Emphasize the ability to deliver over stressing about titles, and focus on building a diverse skill set that allows you to contribute to varied roles within the UX field.
🌍 Pursue practical experience
Seek opportunities to practice skills within or outside your current organization, demonstrating value and building a compelling portfolio through real-world challenges rather than simulated tasks.
💜 Align work with personal values
Prioritize career satisfaction by aligning your work with your personal interests, values, and long-term career goals, rather than focusing solely on salary or title.
If you missed the episode, I encourage you to give it a listen to gain valuable career guidance. And remember to share this post with anyone who is navigating their UX career path as well!

Insightful reminders from Steve Portigal on this episode of the Nielsen Norman Group podcast, especially the importance of carefully framing questions to uncover answers effectively.

In a recent #WorkWonders conversation, host Nea Ningtyas asked Jiva’s Sr. Researcher, Dinda Nuranissa Setiawan:
📌 What have you learned from managing rural user research projects with all their logistical, sometimes unforeseen, struggles?
👩💻 Dinda: “I think it’s knowing when you’re defeated. A lot of the problems that we have during the interviews is that we keep trying to push the candidate to get answers because, you know, we’re prone to biases, and this is a [sunk-cost] fallacy.
We tend to put more effort into something that we’ve already put in a lot of effort before. Since it already takes a lot of effort to go talk to our participant who lives in rural villages, like, you have to get a car over there, it takes several hours. So during that one hour [of interview], you try to push to get answers from the user.
But sometimes there are just situations where it’s not even worth it, like the internet connection is bad or some audio problems are going on or sometimes it turns out it’s not even the right candidate for the research. So - knowing when to stop and that there’s nothing we can do about this except our losses and we just move on.”
📌 How do you encourage the team to avoid falling into this bias?
👩💻 Dinda: “It’s about giving confidence to my colleagues that when you don’t get anything, that’s an insight in itself. So you’re still not leaving empty-handed.”
