The "Big M" that's Debilitating Women in the Workforce (Menopause - not Men or Menstruation) "Our medical system is built to fail the menopausal woman." Dr Mary Claire Haver, leading menopause specialist MENOPAUSE: An inevitable reality for all (biologically female) women. Anyone with the "plumbing" of female anatomy will struggle to navigate the gaps in existing healthcare complexes as her body enters menopause. As things stand, there is scarce awareness / understanding of the myriad ways that menopause impacts women's bodies. From symptoms that mimic everyday headaches, to increased inflammation, osteopathic fractures and brain fogs, women's bodies are besieged by conditions that elude quick & clear diagnoses. An added hurdle: Widespread stigma associated with talking about ageing, non- & post-reproductive bodies. Facts (2012 - 2022): - 48% of India's total population is female; 6.63% between the ages 40-44 - Avg age at natural menopause varies by region but is at least 45.5 yrs - 23.97% of the workforce is female (aged 15-59) - No disaggregation of data on Government Health Expenditure on women's health - Gender disparity in healthcare expenditure has received little attention but "Indians spend less on female healthcare than on male healthcare" (Saikia, Moradhvaj, Bora, 2019) - 0.726 Bn in 2022 to 1.325 Bn in 2030 is the projected growth of the women's health market - how much will focus on menopausal products? With no regional advocacy, we face chronic misdiagnoses of the hormonal origins of our suffering. Having graduated into my 40s, menopause began surfacing in conversations with friends experiencing a host of nagging symptoms: frozen shoulder, weight gain, thinning hair, dry skin, aches & pains, exhaustion, spikes in sugar, vertigo, migraines, ear infections + countless seemingly common conditions in the context of modern workplaces, hectic commutes, and urban life. I have no healthcare, Top Voice or Content Creator creds, but I am peri-menopausal and part of a growing female workforce struggling to establish the criticality of systemic support for the unique challenges we face throughout our working lives. If in 2024, period leaves are still being debated as though they will drain a company's coffers, we have no reason to hope. We soldier on in the absence of adequate care infrastructure, age in the same systems that punished us for having reproductive bodies. Now as a 42 yr old, I am caught in a riptide of narrowly defined metrics of professional success and waves of frightening, often debilitating biological symptoms.  Existing approaches lump all women together, invariably reducing our symptoms to: 1. Inability to cope with workplace pressures 2. biological limitations 3. psychology - "it's all in her head" With the wealth of information out there, it's time we confront these fallacies and normalise conversations on the spectrum of women's experiences in the workplace. #menopauseintheworkplace #thinkdifferently
