A study of the 2020 US election finds that LGBTQ+ people view specific political figures, especially then-President Trump, as a symbolic of the potential loss of LGBTQ+ rights, leading to uncertainty and concerns about the future. According to authors Michele Schlehofer, Kathryn Wagner, and Emily Bramande, “The findings suggested that LGBTQ + people experienced heightened stigma stemming from political discourse and viewed key national figures as symbolic of efforts to erode LGBTQ + rights and protections.” Full article: https://lnkd.in/gt-2KMmV #Trump #LGBTQ #Election #minoritystressmodel #politics #structuralstigma #SRSP #SexualityResearchSocialPolicy

An expectation among consumers of #fairness & of companies doing the right thing, is the rationale for firms to speak to & on behalf of #LGBTQ+ stakeholders. Here is a brilliant blog by my #APCO colleagues on the risk firms face when they don’t engage on these critical issues of equality. #myapco

The United States now has 1,300 LGBTQ+ elected officials, and the number grows every election cycle! However, this number falls short of being representative of the LGBTQ+ community. While 7.6% of adults identify as LGBTQ+, less than 1% of elected officials in the U.S. identify the same. For the government to be fully representative, more than 35,000 LGBTQ+ individuals would need to be elected. Thanks LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, a partner of The Ascend Fund, for nurturing the next generation of LGBTQ+ public leaders and building a strong pipeline for the future. https://bit.ly/3VkxCKE

Did you enjoy our blog ‘Understanding the language and terminology of the LGBTQ+ community’? You may also find our LGBTQ+ glossary useful! Many people avoid using certain LGBTQ+ terms because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing and offending people. Our glossary aims to give you the words and meaning to make conversations easier and more comfortable. Everyone has a right to self-identify and it’s important to note that people will use a variety of terms and labels to express themselves, not all of which are included in this glossary, but hopefully the glossary will give you the foundation to develop your understanding of LGBTQ+ terminology and identity. Always listen and respect a person’s self-identified terminology. Our glossary includes terms such as: 🔴 Ally 💻 A term used to describe someone who supports and advocates for the equal rights of the LGBTQ+ community. It encompasses straight and cisgender allies, as well as those within the LGBTQ+ community who support each other e.g., a bisexual, cisgender man, advocating for the rights of a heterosexual, transgender woman. 🔴 Asexual 💻 A person who does not feel sexual attraction or desire for other people. 🔴 Aromantic 💻 A person who does not feel a romantic connection for other people. To learn more LGBTQ+ terms, read the rest of our LGBTQ+ glossary on the website: https://hubs.ly/Q02jCtLL0 If you like this post and want to hear more from us, click on the top right of our profile page and ring our bell. 🔔 🏷️ #LGBTQ #LGBTHistoryMonth #Inclusion #Diversity

Today, on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), we celebrate the vibrant LGBTQ+ community and recommit ourselves to creating a world free from discrimination. Did you know? The theme for IDAHOTB 2024 is "No one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all." This powerful message reminds us that the fight for equal rights isn't over. We need to ensure every member of the LGBTQ+ community feels included, valued, and protected. Understanding the Terms: Homophobia: Fear/hatred of lesbian, gay, or bisexual people. Transphobia: Fear/hatred of transgender, genderqueer, or non-binary people. Biphobia: Fear/hatred of bisexual people. Be an Ally Who Makes a Difference: Champion Diverse Voices: Share stories and content created by LGBTQ+ individuals. Let their voices be heard! Explore New Narratives: Go beyond mainstream media. Discover LGBTQ+ publications, films, and podcasts for a wider range of experiences. Spark Conversations: When you share content, ask questions and encourage respectful engagement. Let's learn together! Challenge Jokes: We all have a role to play. Kindly address homophobic/transphobic jokes, reminding others of their impact. Educate Your Colleagues: Witness microaggressions? Politely correct them or offer to educate colleagues about respectful behavior. Advocate for Inclusion: Support policies like gender-neutral bathrooms or LGBTQ+ employee resource groups at work. Remember, allyship is a journey, not a destination. Keep learning, keep speaking up, and keep showing up for the LGBTQ+ community in meaningful ways. #LGBTQ+ #Inclusion #Equality #BeAnAlly #IDAHOTB
