OP-ED: Bubble zones are unconstitutional and we need to stop making them. Liberal MP Marco Mendocino has now suggested adding politicians’ offices to this lengthy list of places where protests are prohibited. On July 18, he told Canadian Press that the government should establish “protective zones” around constituency offices for members of Parliament. Under Mendocino’s proposal, anyone who “intimidated or otherwise harassed people within the buffer zone of perhaps 50 to 100 metres would be subject to harsher criminal penalties including jail time.” But Christine Van Geyn argues that we need to stop making new bubble zones. As more and more spaces come under the umbrella of bubbles that prevent speech and protest, our cities move closer to becoming giant bubble zones, with expression of dissent or discord permitted only in small envelopes. To be clear, all bubble zones are a problem. Read her piece here: https://lnkd.in/eS8x-zmd

Delighted to have the Respect UK Manifesto, Stopping Domestic Abuse, out in the world. We are asking the next government to: 1. Fund specialist service provision in every local area 2. Prioritise data and evidence 3. Make justice work 4. Focus on prevention Please read and sign our pledge to stop perpetrators causing further harm and hold them to account #RespectManifesto
Behind every survivor, is a perpetrator. Current responses to them are inadequate and fragmented: many can continue their abuse knowing they will never be stopped or held accountable. But all this can change. July’s General Election presents us with a timely opportunity: to help shape the way political parties address domestic abuse. Our #RespectManifesto proposes a comprehensive, whole-system approach that addresses the root causes and impacts of domestic abuse. https://lnkd.in/dSVgKxav

1 in 5 voters will be impacted by domestic abuse (according to the domestic abuse commissioner). So politicians should read this and join the pledge to make changes that will challenge perpetrators and hold them to account and keep their consituents safe and free to live their lives #domesticabuse #labourpartymanifesto #ifyouwantmyvote #ukelection #conservativemanifesto #libdemmanifesto #respectmanifesto

Hey, so...3 whole states have set things up so that protests or you know your right to protect yourself from tyranny as the right usually says, can be made into a legal matter, if anything escalates. Now, you all may think that's a good thing but what I see, it's a way for the government to infringe on the 1st Amendment rights of free speech. Yes, violence can be a problem for any side; however, if the government goes against the already agreed upon laws that we're all allowed to say whatever we want, without getting arrested, as long as we don't cause damage or harm (as long as cops or outsiders don't instigate), then, what's the point of having a constitution, if the government no longer has honor? What's to stop them from creating violence so they can arrest people and take away their freedoms? https://lnkd.in/ewq8gZWN
