Our webinar from last week is online now. We ask some difficult questions about people who leave "kindness stones," rock cairns, and even fairy houses on public lands, we explore "leave no trace" and its shortcomings, and we talk about how these little objects reenact colonizing processes in landscapes of Indigenous history. https://lnkd.in/e-6FMHyU

If the military strategy to retaliate this terrorist crime involves to accept the killing of 1000 babies as collateral damage in return, this is what you get. It also seeds the hatred for the next Hamas generation to come. The only way out is dialog. Peace is not made by politicians, but by the moderate majority of citizens of both populations in a conflict. They have to, non-violently, interact with each other; develop mutual understanding and empathy. Only this path leads to sustainability of the peace and solving the conflict forever. www.pax.ngo

How Is It Possible? 11/30/23 There is so much that is beyond perplexing in the Middle East conflict. You read the tweet below. You see it on the streets. As a Jew, you feel it deeply in your soul. It pulls at your heart strings, at the neurons engaged in transmitting rationality, at your perspective of humanity and ultimately, you sit in disbelief, at the extent of depravation and lack of moral clarity our species is capable of.

Today I met with Professor Martin Daunton, Emeritus Professor of Economic History at the University of Cambridge, having attended his lecture on ‘Should We Retain and Explain Monuments to Slavery?’. Being of African descent myself, I found this topic to be particularly engaging. My ancestors were once enslaved, having suffered under the brutality and inhumanity of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Whilst I hold no resentment towards the legacies of the perpetrators of the slave trade, I was horrified to see how existing monuments to slavery are cherished in our modern times (in some cases, allowed to remain as they are without need for explanation). In particular, monuments dedicated to the lives lost in the Belgian conquest of the Congo are revered (on the side of the invaders), and those responsible for the destruction and deaths of millions of lives are held in the light, in all their glory. Today, an innumerable number of people suffer from the ramifications of slavery. It is a perhaps a moral blight on humanity’s soul that we celebrate the forefathers of slavery today, giving no regard whatsoever to those afflicted, in the past and today. Whilst the West has condemned slavery with words, their actions (or perhaps, inaction) tell a different story. And that is a dark story, a tale that should not be placed in the light. Slavery exists in many forms today, and as a species we must do better. We can do better. We will do better.

If I post one thing today, let it be this: the questions we do not dare to face, but would do good to ask, and even: try to answer... QUESTIONNAIRE by Wendell Berry 1. How much poison are you willing to eat for the success of the free market and global trade? Please name your preferred poisons. 2. For the sake of goodness, how much evil are you willing to do? Fill in the following blanks with the names of your favorite evils and acts of hatred. 3. What sacrifices are you prepared to make for culture and civilization? Please list the monuments, shrines, and works of art you would most willingly destroy. 4. In the name of patriotism and the flag, how much of our beloved land are you willing to desecrate? List in the following spaces the mountains, rivers, towns, farms you could most readily do without. 5. State briefly the ideas, ideals, or hopes, the energy sources, the kinds of security, for which you would kill a child. Name, please, the children whom you would be willing to kill. 2009 https://lnkd.in/dKEHFbPR

3moOn point! Moreso, Tolkien described evil as something that cannot create but only corrupt that which already exists.
