It was a short second day at the Chiplet Summit due to an early afternoon flight but the amount of insights I was able to grab in just a couple of hours was amazing! I had prepared to hear compelling perspectives about a 'chiplet economy' by attending the panel on "Making Chiplets a Viable Market" but the session blew away every expectation I had. Four luminaries of chip design, integration, and marketing; Ramin Farjadrad from Eliyan Corporation, Kevin Yee from Samsung Semiconductor, Wolfgang Sauter from Marvell Technology and Clinton Walker from Alphawave Semi - impressed us all and quite literally inspired everyone to think differently about the potential of a chiplet ecosystem. Kevin Yee offered his thoughts, saying, “I don't think there are (technology) barriers, I think it's mindset challenges. You have to build your chip like a system and less like an isolated piece of silicon. Education about how we used to do things and how we do things going forward is changing.” Another question raised by the moderator concerned the “need vs want” of chiplets. Clint offered a keen insight saying, “I talk with a lot of customers and not every customer needs to use Chiplets to compete. If your competitors are succeeding with a monolithic design, you’d be hurting your business to do anything else.” Earlier in the panel, Wolfgang raised a comparison between chiplets and corn flake cereal and said the market (chip customers) will likely bifurcate into two segments: those who want standard OTS cornflakes and those who want full customization and have the means to do so. He inferred there may not be much of a market in the “valley” between the two. Clint responded by highlighting what the industry will likely do is start with the basic “corn flake” offering to develop a market of proven, built-out chiplets, and then go full custom and blow it out from there. He remarked this will not only help customers feel confident they can design AND test chiplet-based design to mitigate their risks, but be able to commercialize them. Ramin, who always spoke intentionally, concluded with a statement that grounded us all in the truth that the best solutions will prevail. He said, “This industry has been around for a long time, and at the end of the day, it's all about efficiency.” There here was a good amount of discourse about the challenges of chiplets and an acknowledgement that there are aspirations but few clear answers regarding a ‘chiplet economy’, yet it was a very “pro-chiplet” talk. Each member was optimistic chiplets are a way forward for inviting more players into the semiconductor ecosystem, which increases innovation. I can’t say enough about how valuable this panel was in terms of building my awareness of the direction our industry is going. My sincere thanks to the organizers of the Chiplet Summit. ⭐ Exciting Launch of Wireless Infrastructure Technology Centre (#WiTECH) at #Chalmers: A Milestone for Wireless and Semiconductor Innovation ⭐   We are thrilled to announce the successful kickoff of the Vinnova-funded #WiTECH Centre on January 25, 2024! Bringing together nearly 100 experts from 17 partners, including industry giants and academic scholars, we're setting a new benchmark in wireless and semiconductor technology collaboration.   Our goal is to be a key player in creating a sustainable future by developing 🔹 Next generation of robust and trustworthy wireless communication and sensor systems (e.g., 6G) and 🔹 Sustainable, energy-efficient semiconductor components and processes.   This kickoff event finalized multiple operational and research activities necessary to set the course for a successful and open collaboration. The members of the Industrial Steering Board have been confirmed, including Maria Wargelius (Ericsson) as Chair, Johan Carlert (f. Ståhl) (Saab), Mikael Nilsson (Volvo Cars), Gaute Andersen (Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace), Monika Fuller (RISE Research Institutes of Sweden), Mats Lindgren (AAC Clyde Space Omnisys), Kasra Haghighi (Uniquesec AB), and Katarina Boustedt as well as the members of the International Scientific Advisory Board, including Profs.
