I'm enjoying the sessions at the OLC Virtual Accelerate Conference, especially yesterday's keynote address by Drs. George Siemens and Tanya Gamby, "Elevating Equity: Navigating the Nexus of AI, Mental Health, and Inclusive Education." Dr. Siemens was spot on when he closed the keynote by reminding leaders to directly engage with AI and "play with AI every day" to best lead their teams as AI increasingly touches our daily lives. His comments reminded me of the recent McKinsey & Company article "The organization of the future: Enabled by gen AI, driven by people," which states "Employees and managers should have a clear understanding of gen AI’s strengths and weaknesses and how use of the technology is linked to the organization’s strategic objectives." One thing that I imagine most people prepare for when chairing an event is the scenario where no one in the audience asks any questions. When prepping for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)'s webinar on the power of AI narratives, I made a list of potential questions I could ask panellists in case there was limited audience engagement. In reality, we ended up in quite the opposite situation! The Q&A function was overflowing with questions - there were over 40, and we couldn't possibly get through them all in only an hour. We instead promised to take some time after the event to provide written responses. This document does exactly that - it collates audience questions from the webinar, loosely grouped by themes, and shares panellists’ responses (alongside some of my own thoughts). I hope it serves as a stimulus for wider discussion on AI and narratives – deepening critical thinking and learning to help open up the conversation to anyone who has previously been absent. As always, open to comments and reflections - there are some big, juicy questions in here which are difficult to answer concisely, but we did our best!
