From my experience, this type of thinking is a clear indicator for a company or organization that lacks "diversity of thought." This is a sign for candidates to run fast the other way.
It's unfortunate that leadership ability is still being judged by grad degrees. As you mentioned, I know strong executives who couldn't afford grad school, had demanding jobs early on and couldn't juggle both, progressed just fine without an MBA, etc. Degrees ≠ leadership ability.

Even though I went to b-school and have an MBA, I’m typically turned off by this credential at least for folks joining my startups
"Take me through something you built from scratch." vs "Where did you go to school?"
While Education is highly valued, some demonstrate application without the 3 Letters

8moAgreed. And today's degrees, spending 40% of the time on social justice issues, are as worthless as the paper they are printed on. The 4 to 6 years spent in a classroom cannot compare to those same years spent hands-on.
