It was such an honor, and a bit nerve-racking, doing my first virtual TV interview with Lake Tahoe Television over Giving Tuesday sharing our mission at Box of Balloons Inc. I have a lot to learn regarding vitrual interviews but I think I did a good job for my first time! #graceoverperfection 💪 Lessons I learned: 1. How you see yourself on your laptop is not exactly how you are filmed. 😆 2. Rehersal is key! I forgot to mention we serve foster children too! 😅 3. Placing notes behind the computer is helpful! 🤗 4. Lighting is everything! 😎 5. Its time to invest in a microphone and a better ring light. 😊 6. Always look into the camera on your laptop, not at the screen! 🙃

Once again, the BBC seems to be overreaching, in a desperate attempt to preserve their own position, at the expense of others. My response to Tim Davie’s speech to the Royal Television Society today, where he announced BBC plans to launch two new brands, including a “new digital destination that will offer deeper analysis, longer reads and thought-provoking journalism which provide more context beyond rolling news.” The BBC has repeatedly sought to reassure commercial news publishers that their presence online does not seek to compete with them – despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Today, the director general has gone further, not content with directly competing with local titles through expansionist plans, the BBC now apparently plans to launch two online news brands providing the very content that is core to driving commercial subscription and advertising revenue for publishers, ensuring sustainable business models and investment in independent journalism. If you want to understand movies and TV shows better, it’s important to understand visuals. Specifically, the idea of mise-enscene. For examples, we use House of the Dragon and The Godfather.

Who remembers this? The customized Darth Vader intro! The anticipation of big weekend network movie premieres, and then later your favorite shows; looking forward all week to a certain night at a certain time... Sure it's great to have everything at your fingertips and watch when you want, but it really feels like we've lost some shared culture and de-valued the product a bit with everything, everywhere all at once. It's not just that the new media landscape has compressed all display windows into one (gone from theatrical>ppv>premium>bcast>cable>syndie to just .... streaming), it's also that doing so has pulled all our content out of time. When I worked at the Syfy channel, we used to say that ratings with playback was a quantum change -- time has become a relative variable -- when you ask "how did it do?" the answer is "when?"
