We're excelling at being exceptionally poor at care. 〽️ We're the only industrialized nation without a national paid leave program. 〽️ We have women returning to work barely two weeks postpartum. 〽️ A staggering 40% of families are drowning in debt due to childcare costs. Perspective: My wife and I paid over $18,000 last year for our daughter to attend daycare full-time. I write this on a day my child stayed home from school and is fortunate to have two moms who are able to work from home. Despite boasting the most educated female workforce globally, we fall short in their representation in the labor market. It's high time we acknowledge the elephants in the room. Childcare isn't a personal hurdle for mothers to overcome alone. It's an economic conundrum that demands attention from our policymakers and business leaders. Economies thrive on the backbone of a robust care structure. Without it, our workforce can't function. So why are we not addressing care with the same urgency we reserve for AI and climate change? I remember looking at workforce data at the end of 2020 and being stunned by the unprecedented impact the pandemic had on the labor participation rate of women. It had fallen to the lowest rate since 1980(!), and lack of caregiving support was the number one reason. The shortage of child care workers and rising child care prices combine to make the rebound to work slower than expected, and data reflects this is especially true for women of color.
