NCAA, ESPN HAVE REUPPED THEIR MEDIA RIGHTS The NCAA and ESPN have reupped their media rights partnership, and the 8-year, $920 million pact nearly triples the annual value of their last deal. The agreement includes 40 NCAA men's and women's championships, and the biggest driver of the deal is women's sports, particularly basketball. It alone represents 57%, or $65 million, of the deal’s annual value, roughly 10 times what the sport was valued previously. Some women's basketball coaches didn't get their wish for tournament rights to be sold separately, but The Wall Street Journal notes the deal sets up a revenue-sharing path similar to that of the men’s tournament. #ncaa #espn #reupped #mediarights #womensport #basketball

📈 Viewership ratings for the past 10 men's and women's NCAA Basketball Championship games (last nights men's championship excluded) It would be difficult to overstate the power and importance of the 18.7 number this weekend's matchup between the Iowa & South Carolina women generated. This data, and a heap of other metrics that quantify the level of engagement this entire NCAA WBB season has driven, flies in the face of outdated POV's about the business value of these properties and others like it that have dominated this industry historically. The latest NCAA basketball tournament broadcast rights deals valued the men's tourney at about $870M per year and the women's tourney (as part of a package including NCAA championship broadcast rights of several sports) at $65M per year... This begs the question: Why has the industry been undervaluing this sport and these incredible athletes so severely? 🤔 #sportsmedia #sportsbusiness #womeninsports #NCAA #gamechanger

One of the most interesting sessions, IMO, from last week’s #digitalsummit was Nielsen’s Charlene Polite Corley's “She Got Game” presentation on the growing opportunities for brands in women’s sports. Here are a few highlights: - Four new professional women’s sports leagues will be starting in the next few months (soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball). - What's really cool is this means stand-out collegiate athletes will have a place to land after they graduate. - Sports broadcast networks are recognizing the increase in visibility, attendance and viewership of women's games: - Last month, the WNBA announced a $2.2B (that’s a B) 11-year media rights deal. - Last fall, the NSWL inked a historic $240M four-year media rights agreement. - Women’s rugby is one to watch…. #sportsmarketing #sponsorships #brand Kathy McConnell Lee Mayfield

Another day, another positive publication on the power and growth of women's sport (Sports Business Journal). One thing to add to this list would be the launch of the United Soccer League (USL) Super League coming August of this year. Not only will the league increase opportunities for female athletes, it will double the current amount of professional women's soccer teams for prospective investors to get involved in. #sportsbiz #investinwomenssport #sportsownership

Will be watching for the men’s number later on Tuesday - but a few observations: -the women’s game was historic but might not reach those heights again for a while. Generational players vs. potentially generational, undefeated team. Lightning in a bottle. - you can bet CBS and Turner (Turner Broadcasting System, Inc) will be taking a look at these numbers SINCE the women’s Final Four shifted to Friday/Sunday and, most importantly, put the final on a broadcast channel vs. the rotation that made this year’s men’s semi-finals a cable-exclusive. Does this model work in an age of cord-cutting? - Finally, will the NCAA relent on either a day or time change for the final? The 9:20+ tip off EDT made sense in a pre-streaming era, but I wonder if west coast viewership would really drop much with an earlier start?

Combining passions for Sport, Business and Teaching, I want to provide high school students with a unique opportunity to learn about the exciting and growing world of Sports Business.
At this rate there is not a single Women's Sports record in TV Audience, Attendance, Franchise Valuation, Media Rights, or Sponsorship Investment that should be written in ink! These records are falling by the day. Literally Everyone is Watching Women's Sports. Great set of stats from Joe Pompliano spelled out below. This marks the end of the season and a chunk of that Women's NCAA Basketball star power is heading to the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association). Cathy Engelbert, commissioner of the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), has come out and said there is no reason the current media deal of $60M per year won't be at least doubled moving forward. The WNBA is working hard to maximize the upcoming draft (15 April) and the season to come. - Secondary markets are offering tickets to the Draft for $1000 - The event is held at Brooklyn Academy of Music with seating for around 1000 people and the seats sold out in just 15 min - The Draft will be live on ESPN - There are VIP experiences where fans can walk the orange carpet with the draftees Wieden + Kennedy are involved with "the A+" team working around the clock to deliver the ultimate "Welcome to the W" to capture the momentum. There is no guaranteed success in this window. Every transition has bumps and frenetic ups and downs, so patience and keeping the main thing the main thing will be crucial for "the W", the owners, and their partners. There have been a number of false starts in the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) and the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). This is an inflection point and massive pressure on the leagues and franchises to seize the moment. https://lnkd.in/grHqja3M Sports Business Classes - - There will be massive pressure on Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese to carry the torch for the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association). How would you advise the league or the drafting franchise (ahem... Indiana Fever) help the transition from a marketing and business perspective? How can you create the "face of a franchise" without alienating other players? What happens if success is not immediate? What happens if there is an injury? Caitlin you & the other rookies will have targets on their backs. Players are fighting for their livelihood and will look to knock off the biggest names. Putting all the eggs in one basket or all your investments in one place is risky. How can "the W" manage this risk? #TeamSPB's Stevie Holbrook and Ezzat M. Nsouli report that the National Collegiate Athletic Association and ESPN have come to an eight-year media rights deal effective 1 September 2024 until 2032. The introduction of this “multi-platform home” will include media rights to 40 NCAA championships along with international media rights to those same 40 championships and the Division I men’s basketball championship. Are #Sports rights are a bubble? With the NBA on the precipice of signing it's biggest deal ever, and with everyone bemoaning the potential loss of "Inside The NBA", I'm predicting this is the tail end of a sports rights bubble. Why? - The audience for live games is aging - Outside the NFL, the supply of games is overwhelming and simple economics dictate that when you over-supply a market, value decreases - There is already evidence of this with Roku's saavy pick-up of the MLB under much more down-to-earth terms What do you think?
