I was a Front Desk Officer (FDO) when this picture was taken. I was a graduate 🎓 and had completed my master's programme, but I had no job. I applied for every job posting I saw, regardless of designation or location. Nothing came 😪. I launched a business called "Soup Affairs". I cooked all sorts of soup for working class ladies and bachelors who didn't have time to cook, so I made their job easier; all they had to do was reheat or microwave the bowl and prepare their preferred swallow when they arrived home in the evening. Cool, right? But I was not satisfied. I knew there was more to me, and something in corporate was calling my name 🤣. So I had a customer who appreciated my soups and told others about me; she is a core professional and rarely has time. She connected me to her cousin sister, who happens to be an experienced Human Resources Manager. So, one day, when I went to deliver soup to Mrs Tinu, I used the chance to inform her cousin that I was looking for a job if she had any openings. Months later, she sent me a message regarding an opening for a front desk officer and asked if I was interested, but when I said yes, she made it clear that she had two other applicants she would send there and would do nothing to influence the result. Her duty was to open the doors for me, and it was my responsibility to decide whether the door would remain open for me. I was clearly overqualified for the position, but I was eager to take it. The salary was 80 thousand naira, but I was willing to take it. The CEO asked me, "What is a master's degree holder looking for with a front desk job and not a managerial position?" My reply was: "To me, the designation doesn't matter as I believe it's an opportunity to learn and to bring value for the company." . I was sincere. I suppose he saw it and offered me the job. That position as a Front Desk Officer prepared me for a career in human resources. One decision. One opportunity. One moment. One door. You must gain experience for the "big job" you desire Most of the time, the places you gain experience from do not look like the office you want to work in. Still, every opportunity counts. Make the most of any chance that presents itself. Keep your certifications and degrees aside at times and focus on learning all you need to be productive, and efficient at your desired job because it will come.
