Some dates are always special such as today, the date when we launched Silver Talkies Club six years ago in 2018, based on the inputs from attendees of our events. They wanted to meet more often, know their co-participants better and have more fun and engaging opportunities. Hence Silver Talkies Club was born in a time and age when active ageing, loneliness and isolation among older adults were not spoken about or discussed much in our country. I was in fact told by many peers that I was playing in a small niche field. Fast forward to 2024, almost every new player in the senior care space is looking at addressing similar issues with similar models. Did we start too early or did they start too late? I think it is immaterial for as they say that all's well that ends well. What is most heartening for me is to note that in the pic below all the people who became members in 2018 are still members in 2024, with the exception of one member whom we lost a few months ago. Well, here we are. It has been quite a ride, many ups and downs, but way more good times than bad. I need to thank all of my sales managers, sales directors, general managers, regional and country directors, at the last count around 8,6,9,7 and 5 respectively, for their constant help and support. The countless members of the service and production teams for putting up with me and not moaning too much whenever I dropped the ball. All of my sales colleagues past and present, way too many to mention, for their encouragement, advice, piss taking and support, this job would have been impossible without you. Being now 60 years old, I feel this job is no longer for me, however if I were just 10 years younger, Elis would be the very best company for me to work for. The 35 year old me would be buzzing, the service we offer today is far far better than it ever was and what I believe is planned for the future will keep us at least 12 months ahead of any competition, like it has always been. To the members of the service team who may not agree 100% with that last comment, remember how many customers your plant services and how many customers actually complain in any given month. It is such a small percentage, far more customers are happy with us, they just don't have the time to call you to tell you so. When I joined Sunlight there were big walls between the departments, sales never talked to service, production never talked to sales and transport never talked to anyone. Over the years we have knocked those walls down and we are so much better for it. My advice to everyone is for you all to keep talking. Especially my newer sales colleagues, your service team colleagues are a goldmine of information, so make them your best friends. A box of biscuits at Christmas or a round of ice lollies in the summer go a long way. With that I'll say goodbye. We are off travelling. See you later.

Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing impossible

It is undoubtedly a significant occasion to celebrate the ILAC-IAF Joint Annual Meetings, yet it prompts reflection on whether we are genuinely at a stage of celebration or in need of addressing the global warming on the dilution of accreditation and processes. This meeting should serve as a reminder of the challenges we face in preserving the true essence of quality. It is disheartening to witness the dilution of quality in the pursuit of utopian standards, often driven by commercial interests. Both ISO 9000, ISO 17025, and 15189 standards require substantial changes; it appears that those on the technical committee may be disconnected from practical realities. In India, the dilution of standards is happening rapidly, and accreditation and certifications have become more commercialized. The IAF Logo certificate is now available at USD 10. Trusting the quality of lab reports is becoming increasingly difficult. All of these issues should be brought to the attention of the ILAC-IAF meeting. A disclaimer should be used in the accreditation certificate, stating that accreditation doesn’t guarantee the quality of test results.
