Oh July where did you go? I'm practicing dialing back my expectations for what I'm going to accomplish in the summer months. I have a couple of long weekends coming up in August and I had to remind myself that it's time off which means fewer to-dos. If I'm taking a full vacation that's always one of my top three priorities but we'll see if I've balanced expectations. How about you? Coming off a family vacation and the 4th of July holiday, I can’t help but reflect on how some of my fondest memories took place during the summer months. So, what would you like to accomplish in the upcoming twelve months? The more clarity you have the better. To plan your year, start by brainstorming ideas using the question below: • What would make the next twelve months truly valuable?Spend few minutes, writing down answers to this question. Then, to further help you, visualize yourself exactly twelve months from today. Now, write down what you would have accomplished by filling in the prompt below: • The last twelve months were truly amazing because… Finally, spend a moment visualizing your achievement, while experiencing a deep feeling of satisfaction from achieving it. It's vacation season which made me think of this little thing that can go a long way for your career (and the careers of others). When you are going out of office (what is an office!!!), don't have your boss handle your coverage when you are out. Instead, delegate to someone on your team, or even someone on another team but looking for growth opportunities. This has two benefits. First, you get to practice delegation, which is generally hard for a lot of people, even/especially high performers. Two, you are giving someone (typically junior to you) a growth opportunity in that they are able to get a dry run at doing the "next job." It's a win-win. Your boss will appreciate it too ;)

Just got back from a two-week vacation. Yeah, I actually did it! Went camping in Europe with my cousins – it's been forever since I had a break like this. Totally felt like a glitch in the matrix! 😉 Biggest takeaway? Having a rock-solid team back home is everything. Rich, my right-hand man, totally nailed it. He took over the daily project calls, kept everything on track, and made sure it all ran smooth. He's a champ! This break made something crystal clear: 👉 No matter how intense the project gets, a great team is your secret weapon. They keep things moving, even when you're off the grid. To all project managers out there: Build a team you can rely on. It changes everything. PS: Full disclosure, I did sneak in a bit of work during my vacation. Despite my I-can’t-believe-I-have-to-work-on-vacation face, it wasn't all that bad.
