There’s something about 5 ⭐️ hotels that I’m deeply fond of. The customer experience! We don’t need to explain what we want or even ask for assistance in usual activities. I wanted to use the pool but I had forgotten my shorts in the car and before I cogitate to ask for it or to get the keys, they ask me if I would accept the kindness of bring my shorts to my room… In Brazil it has been very hot! When I left the hotel my car was waiting for me with air conditioning set so I could have the most comfortable journey possible. The hotel didn’t have any kind of super extravagant features, but the package and how they made me feel, makes me desire no other hotel. Here are the 7 hospitality entrepreneurs and thought leaders I admire:- 1. Brian Chesky Airbnb's journey has been nothing less than phenomenal and a lot of the credit goes to Brian's leadership style. He defied all the norms by putting empathy and human connection at the center of everything. I wouldn't shy away from saying that we often talk about Brian's 11-star customer experience logic while building NomadGao. 2. Chip Conley I got to know about Chip Conley only a couple of years ago but he has changed the way I look at hospitality as a business. He is full of practical wisdom, having built a cool chain of hotels and having helped Airbnb scale globally. His book, Peak - How Great Companies Find Their Mojo is a bible for leaders not just in hospitality but every industry. 3. Danny Meyer No matter which hospitality-related book I pick up, it doesn't end without mentioning Danny Meyer, a master restauranteur and author of Setting the Table. I have recently picked up the book and every page of it is full of value. 4. Will Guidara Will turned around a struggling restaurant into a 3 Michelin Star one. His book, Unreasonable Hospitality, is a go-to guide for building a brand people love. I'm on a re-read of the book as I couldn't get enough of it on Kindle. 5. Rafat Ali I didn't know about Skift until a year ago but I have been following Rafat and Skift ever since. Skift content is insightful and adds a lot of value to my decision-making process as a #hospitality #entrepreneur. David Abraham/Bryan Stewart I met Dave and Bryan in 2016 when Outpost was a few months old and I was on my #digitalnomad journey across Southeast Asia. My time at Outpost inspired me to build something to attract global digital nomads to India. That's how Remote Explorers and eventually NomadGao were born. Airbnb is a $100B company today, but it didn't start that way. It began as a simple idea to rent out air mattresses in their apartment to make extra cash. But it wasn't until the founders noticed that travelers loved the unique experience of staying in local homes rather than hotels that the idea truly took off. For my first podcast interview for Business Leader I spoke to Tom Leathes, co-founder and CEO of Motorway. https://lnkd.in/e6nkM6ZM I think you can learn a lot if you have 35 mins to spare, but if you want to cherry pick moments, here is a breakdown: 4.50 - Tom's early life and the benefits of moving around a lot in childhood. 6.00 - His first taste of life in a start up called Future Forests - catching the bug. 11.00 - The benefits of bootstrapping a business. Key insight: Funding can lock you into an idea too early. 16.00 - What went wrong with the Top 10 company, after a pivot to focusing on hotels. 19.30 - How you can fail right - treating your employees and investors as well as possible so you can go again in your next venture. 22.00 On a business failing: "You have sleepless nights, it's hard but it's fine, the downside risks are not as bad as you think, it's good for people to know that." 24.00 - Key insight: "If you are going to try and take on the incumbents in a large space... [say in hotels] you don't try and build a nicer version of Expedia, you have to build Airbnb, you have to rethink how the market works." 27.21 Building Motorway in the early days, all hands on deck with the co-founders receiving Whatsapp pictures of cars and cold-calling dealerships! 30.30 What does the fate of the Cazoo mean for Motorway? 32.40 The appeal or otherwise of doing an IPO 33.40 Key insight: The UK needs to leverage its talent to build global success stories, an issue beyond our stock exchange. 36.00 The importance of being direct and having hard conversations This is the first time I've done a proper podcast, in the sense that it's not just a radio programme made available on-demand afterwards on podcast platforms, this was was originally conceived to be first and foremost a podcast. This frees you from time constraints - before I made shows that had to be, say, 17min29secs exact, to fit in a radio schedule! Hopefully the pace of this is more like an audiobook. And the less you hear from me the better! My job is to be the kindling to let the interviewee start to tell their story and then keep the fire burning.
