Trauma is a significant factor in the development of criminal behaviour among young people, and trauma-informed care can be an effective approach to reducing crime rates. Trauma can take many forms, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, natural disasters, and community violence. Children who experience trauma are at a higher risk of developing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse. Trauma-informed care helps identify and address the underlying causes of criminal behaviour, reducing recidivism rates among juvenile offenders. By providing services and support sensitive to the needs of traumatized individuals, front-line service providers can help break the cycle of trauma and criminal behaviour. Key principles of trauma-informed care include safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. These principles aim to create a safe and supportive environment for traumatised individuals, build trust with them, give them control over their lives, collaborate with other professionals and agencies, and empower them to manage symptoms and achieve personal goals. With September recognized as National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, The Virginia Law Enforcement Foundation (VALE) is dedicated to assisting our First Responders in dealing with mental health issues, coping with job related stress, and physical fitness. In Virginia Since November of 2022, we know of six reported First Responder suicides. Statistics show that over a 25 year career, 25% of law enforcement officers will consider suicide. That is 1 out of every 4 officers. There is a stigma in the first responder community, that first responders (police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel) are there to help and should not need help. We at VALE have made it one of our primary missions to combat that stigma and assist our first responders in dealing with mental, emotional and physical issues arising from stress and PTSD related to critical incidents they encounter in the line of duty. #EndTheStigma #ItsOKNotToBeOK #police #firstresponders #lawenforcement #fire #ems

One of the top things that governments and law enforcement departments can do to help with suicide prevention, mental health treatment, reducing arrests, and detention center costs, and negative interactions with the public is to ensure that Law Enforcement Officers are trained in Crisis Intervention and Crisis Communication. Our course, accredited by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Advanced Training Division, covers mental health and substance use signs and symptoms, crisis communication, crisis de-escalation, and suicide intervention. Our advanced class also covers intellectual disabilities, medical conditions, crisis negotiation, officer self-care and the basics of peer programs within departments and interagency programs. https://lnkd.in/g7UEDRTT

Recognizing Signs of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Understanding the signs is crucial for early intervention and support. Here are some common indicators: 1️⃣ Flashbacks: Sees the traumatic event happening again, whether awake or in dreams. 2️⃣ Reenactment: Acts out the event while playing. 3️⃣ Fear Triggers: Fears items or places linked with the traumatic event. 4️⃣ Hyperarousal: Often seems nervous Recognizing these signs is the first step toward providing support and understanding. In our We C.A.N. (We Care. We Advocate. Preventing Substance Use Disorders Among Military Youth Overview The 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that 1.2 million adolescents aged 12-17 were reported to have a substance use disorder (SUD). We must consider this concerning number as we look to support the children of those who served or are serving in the military. The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) reports that there are almost 2 million children of service members on active duty in the National Guard and Reserves. Additionally, it is estimated that 2 million youth have parents who are post-9/11 Veterans. These children have added stressors due to the service requirements of their parents or caretakers that put them more at risk. This learning community will focus on the behavioral health needs of military-affiliated children, underscore the importance of understanding risk and protective factors, illustrate ways to offer support through community efforts, and provide tools and resources to navigate the myriad of supports available. This learning community will provide participants with an opportunity to learn with a small group in an interactive setting.
