Bureaucrats love bureaucracy. Governments love control. There is no interest in accelerating the opening of space by citizens in many parts of the government. In fact, there are many who fear loss of control, so making processes more complex fits their agenda. This plays into the current false narrative that evil private players, if left to their own devices will monopolize the #HighFrontier. In reality, the opposite is true. They open it by not releasing their grasp it is now government that will keep the people from the maximum benefit of space - even as they project a culture of waste and war into the Solar System. The private sector does not want a wild west in space. we need regulations, we need rules of the road. We do not need roadblocks.

🗞️The UK Space Agency is refuelling space sustainability! ⛽🛰️ The UK Space Agency is funding the first step of a refuelling mission that would refuel at least two satellites, including the national debris removal spacecraft. Our UK space junk collector, CLEAR, will be refuellable and completely reusable. We are very excited to see this mission going forward, as it would enable CLEAR to capture even more debris at a lower cost with the same servicer. After removing two debris, our CLEAR satellite will be thirsty and will need a good refuelling before it's able to continue cleaning even more! This mission will not only be useful to demonstrate refuelling in orbit, but it will also allow CLEAR to keep going, and then it will move on and will refuel other commercial satellites in need of fuel. It's 3 for 1! Exciting missions ahead mixed with healthy competition between companies and amazing teams, make the perfect mix for a boom in innovation and disruptive technologies! A bit late to share about this one, but the brilliant talk from the 🛰️ UK Space Agency earlier this month at Civil Service Live on space debris made me think about something we should always consider in User centred design: ❓Could we cause any potential harm? When the space race started nobody was really thinking about what would happen with all those satellites and equipment at their end of life. Here’s an image (not at scale) from how the Earth’s orbit looked in 1957 vs 2024. There are 32,000 objects larger than 10cm orbiting our planet at great speed, which can cause collisions and we still don’t know much about how them disintegrating through the atmosphere can affect it and our environment. The UK is one of the countries working towards solving this problem and there are organisations prototyping solutions to clean up space. Nevertheless, more international cooperation is needed.

Gilmour Space’s satellite to ‘dragsail’ to Earth Auckland, New Zealand based Frond Space Systems and Gold Coast rocket manufacturer Gilmour Space Technologies have signed a contract to supply a dragsail system for Gilmour Space’s MMS-1 satellite mission. Frond, which specialises in deployable space technology will provide a MICRO dragsail system, a lightweight and compact device that can be deployed at the end of a spacecraft’s life to increase its drag and accelerate its deorbiting. Space debris has become a major issue for satellite companies and others operating in space, with the dragsail ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
