To often individuals talk about change management as if it is something that is simply "done" to change a process rather than a specific approach with the intended outcome of supporting individuals and organizations through various periods of transition using methods grounded in science and psychology. Working with change may take more time up front however builds sustainability, resilience, and skills sets in leaders and staff alike that promote ongoing improvements within the organization. I recently had the opportunity to read the detailed summary of the book "Learned Helplessness: A Theory for the Age of Personal Control" by Christopher Peterson, Steven F. Maier, and Martin E.P. Seligman, and it has been an eye-opening experience for me. This book delves into the concept of learned helplessness, a psychological condition where individuals believe they have no control over the outcomes of their actions, leading to passive and defeated behaviors. As a psychologist, nothing resonates more with me than individual psychology and aiding people in their growth. As much as it is expected to keep our home and work lives separate, our professional endeavors are deeply influenced by the undercurrents of our personal lives. During my work with students, I noticed how certain changes were effortless for some, yet others were impossibly ensnared. This inspired me to dig deeper, beyond surface-level solutions, into the realm of family systems. This framework, often reserved for resolving personal issues, is strikingly absent in the corporate context. The notion that rationality must override emotion in a workplace is a lost opportunity for profound transformation. Here's a simple definition of what it means to be Emotionally Regulated. We have all had emotional reactions that are not aligned with our feelings. Examples - Fear shows up as anger - Powerlessness shows up as aggression - You have a "big" reaction to something "small." - Don't express an emotional need "in the moment" and wait to express it "two weeks later." When someone is "Emotional Regulated," they show the right emotion at the right time, in the right amount. - Fear shows up as fear, - Powerless shows up as acceptance of powerlessness, - Small things show up as small things, - Frustrations you experience now, show up "now" as opposed to getting "stuffed" for two weeks.
