In 2023, the world produced some 37.4 gigatons of CO2 and 59 gigatons including all greenhouse gases. Aviation’s share of this is 2% while transport’s total contribution is 23%. At #IATAWCS, Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Chief Economist and SVP, Sustainability, put this challenge into context: “We must do something about our emissions, but we must also keep our perspective”. She said the industry will certainly need all the levers available to it to achieve #FlyNetZero by 2050. SAF will be the primary tool, among many other initiatives that will need to play an important role. As deadlines for climate goals get closer, signs of tension between customers and suppliers surface. Reuters has reported airlines and energy firms have clashed over scarce availability of alternative fuels as a three-day summit came to a close. Operators are facing down commitments made to climate goals at a time of record demand when sustainable aviation fuels account for just 0.5% of what’s needed. The industry committed to reducing net emissions to zero by 2050 and is essentially relying on plant-based fuels to make it possible. Doubts on the sidelines of the event about the sector’s ability to hit its 2050 longer term target were not shared by Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, but that didn’t stop him comparing 2023 earnings at French energy major, TotalEnergies ($23.2 Bn), with the net earnings of the combined airline industry ($27 Bn) in his closing statement. He went further, reportedly stating, "The fuel companies who produce the problem ... we need to see those companies like Total investing significant sums of money in the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. That's the reality of where we are." Whilst Total’s representative defended the company’s record, it illustrates how relationships and supply chains are already being tested as the stakes for business, and our climate, rise. #biofuels #sustainability #energytransition #netzero

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released a report titled "A Reflection on Policies Used to Support the Creation of New Renewable Energy Markets," highlighting the crucial role of government policies in the success of wind and solar energy. The report offers key insights into the aviation sector's transition to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), emphasizing the need for tailored, strategically sequenced policies and robust government support for research and development. IATA calls for urgent, coordinated action to scale SAF production and achieve aviation's decarbonization goals.

By 2045, the industry will need 636 billion liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to replace all fossil fuels currently in use. The projection is from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). SAF stands out as the market's main hope for decreasing emissions over the next few decades: by itself, SAF could contribute around 65% of the reduction in emissions needed by aviation to reach net zero CO2, as estimated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). One of the main reasons is that it does not require adaptation of the engine fuel system currently in use. Currently, SAF accounts for less than 0.1% of all aviation fuels consumed, which places Brazil as a player with unique opportunities in this market. In this context, we are rapidly disrupting the SAF market by leveraging macaúba oil - a highly competitive native plant from Brazil – through a robust renewable fuels project designed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80%. Currently, hydrotreatment offers the main commercial pathway for sustainable #aviation fuel (SAF) production. As part of the hydrotreatment process, the SAF yield can vary significantly, depending on whether producers want to prioritise renewable diesel or SAF production. Since hydrotreatment accounts for by far the biggest portion of planned SAF production capacity, it provides great flexibility for producers to adapt to different market conditions, government incentives and demand. Currently, renewable diesel may offer better revenue for producers. For example, carbon credits in the US are based on energy density and therefore better for renewable diesel.
