Gus Steele’s Post

Absolutely spot on Monty Proud to represent yourself and Jack for The University of Manchester and Govan & Uni of Manchester FC, two coaches and clubs who stood up for what was right without exception and made sure we did the same. Too often in the Manchester Football League and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) did I witness openly homophobic remarks made either towards teammates or generally. Incidents, which more often than not, went unpunished, even after reported. If brutally honest, I think we’re all aware that this rainbow laces campaign run by The Football Association has been the most lacklustre in years. A cynic may ponder whether this is due to the expose of Rainbow Washing characters like seemingly key allies such as England Vice-Captain Jordan Henderson. Whilst it is particularly disheartening to see an ally of the community turn his back for one last payday, scrutiny should start with those at the pinnacle of football decision making. It is no wonder that the LGBTQ+ community still feel unsafe in the game when examining FIFA’s selection for recent World Cup hosts. Russia 2018 Russian pro-LGBT advocacy groups are deemed extremist and banned, and it is illegal for individuals to "promote homosexuality". The nation provides no anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people and does not have a designation for hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Qatar 2022 Qatar criminalises same-sex sexual activity between men and between women. Sentences can include a possible maximum penalty of death by stoning. Saudi Arabia 2034 Saudi Arabia criminalises same-sex sexual activity between men and between women. The gender expression of trans people is also criminalised. Sentences include a maximum penalty of death. There is evidence of the law being enforced in recent years. It is therefore no surprise that grassroots football is still rife with anti-LGBT+ sentiment. Football needs to better, we must do more and it is why I am particularly proud and honoured to have represented strictly antifascist and outwardly inclusive clubs such as Govan & Uni of Manchester FC and Clapton CFC, where behaviour like this would be instantly shut down.

As the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign enters its 10th year it is just as important as ever to state that football is a game for all. Everyone should feel comfortable being their true self whether participating or attending. As we always have, the club will be providing free laces for any players that want to show their support for the campaign. #keepitup #purpleandproud #ManchesterFootball #CheshireFootball #ManchesterBusiness #sponsorship #sponsorshipopportunity #fallowfield #didsbury #chorlton #withington
