A new study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that infant and newborn deaths increased in Texas after the state enacted SB8, an extreme 6-week abortion ban. As one author noted, since SB8 was passed about a year before the Dobbs decision, these findings "might foreshadow what is happening in other states." https://gu.tt/4bkqrIe

Why is medical abortion essential health care for women? Induced abortion is a safe and essential health care component of women's health care. Like all medical matters, decisions regarding abortion should be made by patients in consultation with their health care providers and without undue interference by outside parties. Women obtaining abortion are entitled to privacy, dignity, respect and support. Important to understand in most cases abortion does not affect future health such as breast cancer, depression, or infertility. Factors that influence or necessitate a woman's decision to have an abortion; Not limited to; contraceptive failure, barriers to contraceptive access and use, rape, incest, intimate partner violence, fetal anomalies, illness during pregnancy, exposure to teratogenic medications, placental abruption or prevue, pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, and cardiac or renal conditions. About 1 in 4 women in the U.S will have an abortion by age 45. A physical exam and/or ultrasound exam is done to assist confirm gestational age and identify symptoms of ectopic pregnancy or risk factors for having one. In the U.S more than 9 in 10 abortions occur in the first trimester (end of 12 weeks). In the U.S less than 1 in 100 abortions occur in the second trimester (13 - 27 weeks). When abortion is illegal or highly restricted, women resort to unsafe means that includes self-inflicted abdominal and bodily trauma, ingestion of dangerous chemicals and medications, and reliance on unqualified abortion providers. Approximately 21 million women globally account for 13% of all maternal deaths, nearly 50,000 annually. https://lnkd.in/dtzA2RwD

What are the stakes in states like Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania, where the Supreme Court's ruling is being tested? I spoke with Dr. Neel Shah, chief medical officer at Maven Clinic, and Dr. Mary Jacobson, chief medical officer at Hello Alpha, about where our country stands. Here is an interesting reflection on the implementation of domestic facing policies and legislation in sexual and reproductive health rights in the context of international women’s day. A is for Anna, Autonomy and also Abortion.
Despite making promises in their 2019 election campaign to ensure public abortion was available for all, the current Labor government has barely uttered a word on the topic - not in its 2023 budget, not in Senate Estimates, and we are still waiting for its now long overdue response to its own Federal Senate Inquiry into Universal Reproductive Healthcare held last year, writes Anna Noonan. The silence from Australia’s politicians and from the medical system is overwhelmingly loud.
Abortion is key to women's autonomy. Why are our politicians still so silent about it?

The aftermath of an abortion ban ? An increase in death of infants ? And putting mothers at risk too ? Yes. Some 2,200 infants died in Texas in 2022 – an increase of 227 deaths, or 11.5%, over the previous year, according to preliminary infant mortality data CNN obtained through a public records request. Infant deaths caused by severe genetic and birth defects rose by 21.6%. That spike reversed a nearly decade-long decline. Between 2014 and 2021, infant deaths had fallen by nearly 15%.
