With Florida’s 6-week abortion ban now in effect, the state moves into the Most Restrictive category on our map because it has a host of other restrictions that make accessing care before 6 weeks impossible for many. Here’s what you need to know about the impact of this ban: -Many people don’t know they’re pregnant at 6 weeks -Abortions in Florida have increased since Roe was overturned -Data from our Monthly Abortion Provision Study shows travel from out-of-state accounted for 58% of FL’s overall increase in abortions between 2020 and 2023. Floridians will have a chance to weigh in on abortion access in their state this November—a measure that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution will appear on the 2024 ballot. One way to support people’s access to care is by donating to FL abortion funds, including: Whole Woman's Health, LLC and Tampa Bay Abortion Fund. BREAKING: South Carolina’s 6-week abortion ban is now in effect after the state Supreme Court upheld the ban. This is an enormous loss for South Carolinians' reproductive autonomy. Here’s what you need to know: 📢 Many people don't know they're pregnant at 6 weeks. 📢 SC has even more restrictions than Georgia, the other state with a 6-week ban. 📢 Even if people know they are pregnant, delays like getting an appointment, the resources to pay + making other arrangements like taking time off work means accessing care will be almost impossible. 📢 We know that anti-abortion policymakers won’t stop at a 6-week ban. The goal is always a total end to abortion access. This ban not only has devastating impacts for South Carolinians, but across the region. With this in effect, Florida is the only state in the region where people can seek abortions after 12 weeks. And abortion access is at risk there too. We know those who are already and will continue to be most impacted by abortion bans are people marginalized by systemic racism and economic insecurity. Donating to abortion funds like Carolina Abortion Fund and Palmetto State Abortion Fund is more essential than ever to support people’s access to care. 🎉 Denmark strengthens abortion rights! For the first time in 50 years, Denmark is 1. Raising the abortion limit from 12 to 18 weeks 2. Allowing 15-17 year-olds decide to access care without parental consent "Today marks a historic win for Danish women's right to their own body. 50 years ago, we gained the right to decide for ourselves. Now we strengthen that right by raising the limit for abortion on demand to week 18 – it was about time," said DFPA Executive Director Majbrit Berlau. Congratulations to Sex & Samfund / Danish Family Planning Association for all their work to update the Danish abortion law from 1973 and restarting the public conversation in Denmark on this topic. "In times where abortion creates polarization around the world, and abortion rights are being rolled back in several counties, Danish politicians are leading the way protecting abortion on demand. While some countries are turning back time, Denmark is now getting an up to date abortion legislation," said DFPA Executive Director Majbrit Berlau. *RESEARCH CORNER* In this study, the researchers aimed to investigate the potential impact of abortion bans in neighboring states on the volume of abortions in Michigan. Using ArcGIS mapping software they identified which counties in neighboring states had their closest out-of-state abortion clinic located in Michigan and estimated the potential change in the number of abortions in Michigan if neighboring states were to implement complete bans on abortion. The results of the study indicated that if neighboring states were to implement complete abortion bans, the volume of abortions in Michigan could increase by approximately 5928 out-of-state patients annually, representing a 21% increase. The researchers conclude that abortion bans in neighboring states have the potential to place a significant strain on the capacity of abortion facilities to provide adequate abortion care in states with more lenient abortion laws. https://lnkd.in/gfZ7K7KN

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OVERVIEW Each year, around 73 million abortions are performed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. About 45% of all abortions are performed unsafely, of which 97% occur in developing countries. Unsafe abortion is one of the main causes of maternal deaths. With the greater liberalization of abortion laws in recent decades, more women have been able to access reproductive health services, and the quality and safety of abortion have improved. However, the safety of abortion procedures differs greatly between countries where abortion is legal and countries with major restrictions: almost 90% of abortions in countries that allow it are considered safe, whereas where abortion is prohibited this rate is only 25%. Although the legal framework for abortion varies from country to country, most allow abortion in at least some circumstances. Globally, 22 countries completely ban abortion, and about 100 countries have some restrictions. In Latin America, Colombia and Mexico were the countries that most recently relaxed restrictions on abortion, following what became known as the "green wave" in the region. Supporters say the movement seeks to address health inequalities and expand women's rights, but opponents say it goes too far.

Today marks 51 years since the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to an abortion in all 50 states until it was overturned in 2022. While this landmark decision made abortion services safer and more accessible throughout the country, it did not guarantee equitable or affordable access, especially as anti-abortion elected officials chipped away at these rights for the half century, culminating in the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Despite that, a brighter future for access is still possible. In fact, since the Dobbs decision, we’ve seen the number of legal abortions remain stable, elected officials pass legislation meant to protect abortion seekers and providers, communities rally in support of their local abortion funds, awareness of medication abortion at an all-time high (same for general support of abortion access—which the majority of Americans are behind), and voters come out in droves to make it clear that they stand for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. While there continue to be threats to accessing abortion care, at Hey Jane we remain undaunted. We’ve helped more than 45,000 patients get the care they need, and we’re not going to stop. Let’s make 2024 the year that we don’t just protect, but expand abortion access for years to come. Abortion Fund Of Ohio has seen a 400% increase in need since the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Why are abortion funds being abandoned in the long-term strategy to expand and protect abortion access? Where is the sustained backing for the grassroots organizations tirelessly assisting abortion seekers in overcoming the numerous socioeconomic hurdles preventing their access to abortion care? Abortion funds are the ones ensuring people are able to receive the abortion care they want, need and deserve, with dignity and love, regardless of a court decision. https://lnkd.in/grBrBWWP

The Florida abortion ban has not yet taken effect, but when it does it will be devastating. Shuttered Florida clinics and increased demand could create a backlog that stretches across several U.S. states. And as more people need to travel for their abortion care, we’ll also see clinics scheduling appointments well into the future to meet the demand. So this means people seeking abortions may be forced to delay their procedures and carry their pregnancies further into term, which can mean risking their health. Abortion bans are cruel and The Brigid Alliance is ready to double down our efforts to help Floridians and abortion seekers across the U.S. travel to access their abortion care and back home safely. We continue to fight to make abortion borderless, burden-free and accessible to all. https://lnkd.in/ewsSg68u

Last week, Indiana became the 15th US state to ban almost all abortions. But abortion restrictions in Indiana have burdened Hoosiers long before the ban was proposed and implemented. Our Hoosier Abortion Access Study examined the experiences of people trying to get abortions in Indiana between 2010-2019, as well as the perspectives of abortion providers and clinic staff. The video in our Medium post below describes the study findings and includes views of those who participated in the research and were directly impacted by abortion laws in Indiana. Researchers at Indiana University and Ibis Reproductive Health conducted the study in collaboration with All-Options, the Chicago Abortion Fund, and Kentucky Health Justice Network. https://ow.ly/1Lwz50PGv75 #IbisDrivesChange

In the two years since the US Supreme Court removed the constitutional right to abortion by quashing the 1973 Roe v Wade judgment, severe restrictions have been enacted in 41 states. Of those states, 14 now have total abortion bans. This disturbing trajectory has sparked a global reckoning. It demands we interrogate the state of abortion rights globally to reveal how abortion is far from being universally accessible, safe and free from stigma – even in countries where it’s been legal for decades. Take Japan, where doctors ask for proof of spousal consent, or Britain, which requires authorization from two doctors. Why is abortion, defined by the World Health Organization as a ‘simple and common healthcare procedure’, wrapped up in so much red tape? Find out more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eD_auxdX
