Former Policy Advisor for DOL/OWCP, Experienced Behavioral Healthcare Administrator, and Substance Use Treatment Advocate. Views Expressed Are My Own.
It's far past time to reduce the cost of Naloxone/Narcan. This life-saving drug can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, but it's only effective if you carry it with you. Much like a CPR face shield, it's of no use if it's tucked away in a junk drawer. Let's work towards making Naloxone/Narcan more affordable and accessible to those who need it. #naloxone #narcan #overdoseprevention #affordablehealthcare

How I became a pain in the ass in the drug policy reform movement In October 2017 I attended a big meet-up (organized by Andrew) at the New School. Every HR person in the city-state was there. They all said: “We are really cutting back painkiller prescriptions and promoting MOUD.” But all of their presentations showed drug deaths were rising. Andrew ignored me as I tried to make this point. Flash forward: Just at that point pain drug prescriptions were plummeting nationwide. At the same time — like a second horseman of the apocalypse — drug deaths were surging. Meanwhile, although MOUD may be somewhat difficult to access some places, it is now being pushed by commercial pharm interests and government agencies across the US. The NIDA-NIH — the major public health proponents of MOUD — have just confessed after a detailed trial of the MOUD programs in four key states: they had no impact. https://lnkd.in/eq_FyjFQ I have predicted these things all along, burning my bridges with every key HR organization, outlet and publication. What happens when I have been proven right as chief pain-in-the-ass in the field? Might people say, “Stanton was right — his understanding of addiction is crucial for us going forward”? Or they might double down on blocking my access to the field/their groups/their publications. What do you suppose will occur?
Dr Stanton Peele on Instagram: "Dr. Stanton Peele reflects on how he became a “pain in the a$$” in the drug policy reform community by challenging ineffective approaches. In 2017, he warned that reducing painkiller prescriptions might lead to more drug deaths. Recent studies now confirm his concerns. It’s time to rethink our strategies! 🧠💊 #DrugPolicyReform #OpioidCrisis #HarmReduction #PublicHe

It is used along with traditional opioid painkillers which enable patients to reduce the frequency and dosage of opioids gradually. Additionally, a steadily aging population is playing a vital role in spurring the demand for medical cannabis as geriatric patients are more likely to develop chronic diseases and require frequent physician visits. Our State of New Jersey is moving in the right direction with bipartisan support for Bill A4057 Aca (1R) that "Requires hospitals to test for fentanyl and xylazine as part of urine drug screenings." https://lnkd.in/eMTunkPm Hey, how about this one? Testing. Is. Harm-Reduction. Fentanyl isn't just found in counterfeit pills – it's also present in unexpected places like marijuana, nasal sprays, and even eye drops, putting infants, veterans, and everyone at risk. Even more concerning, existing tests are often inaccurate, with a staggering 76% missing fentanyl entirely. Rapid FDA-cleared tests offer immediate and reliable detection, empowering healthcare professionals to make faster, life-saving decisions. Imagine if the Over-The-Counter tests were readily available in: Schools Cities Healthcare facilities Homes Clinics Pharmacies Non-profit organizations Wider access translates to more lives saved. Let's put pressure on our local legislators around the United States, the Opioid Task Forces, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and groups like National Harm Reduction Coalition who are directing policy and distributing information about harm reduction along with the products involved. https://lnkd.in/ehjpC2Mb #harmreduction #opioidcrisis #fentanyl #fentanylcrisis

Check out my new MMWR on potential risks and benefits of higher dose naloxone, just posted--> https://lnkd.in/ezeSBpmR We found when law enforcement used a higher dose (8 mg) nasal naloxone, recipients had no higher chance of survival and experienced 2.5 times more opioid withdrawal symptoms. This study suggests there is no benefit to using high dose naloxone in response to a probable opioid overdose, even with more fentanyl in the drug supply. #harmreduction #naloxone #overdose #cdc #mmwr
