What is the job market like right now? This is a question we are being frequently asked by both candidates and clients. We keep our fingers on the pulse by following a range of sources including what is being said by both our candidates and clients. We have used their feedback along with the latest Hiring Trends Index by TotalJobs to put together the following snapshot for you: ⏲️ What's Happening in Jobs: Fewer people are out of work (unemployment at 4.3%), and there are fewer job openings than before (below one million). 💼 Hiring by Businesses: - Who's Hiring: 8 in 10 businesses were hiring in the last quarter. - Time to Hire: It’s taking a bit longer to hire people – now around 6.1 weeks. - Looking Ahead: More than half the businesses feel they can find the right people for their jobs in the next few months. 💰 Pay and Jobs: - Wages: Pay is finally keeping up with the cost of living, but not growing much. - More Job Seekers: With living costs going up, more people are looking for jobs. 🌲 Green Jobs are In: - Big Demand: Jobs focused on the environment have grown a lot (up 677% since 2019). - Businesses Reacting: About 1 in 4 companies are adding more environment-friendly jobs. - Learning Green Skills: Less than 20% of companies teach green skills, even though lots of people want to learn. 🎯 Jobs in Different Areas: - Busy Sectors: The most hiring is expected in Transportation, Real Estate, Healthcare, Finance, and IT. - Popular Jobs: Most companies are looking for people in Operations, IT, Sales, and Customer Service. ⚖️ Sustainability Matters: - What Workers Want: Most employees, especially the younger ones, want their companies to care about the environment. - Being Real: Candidates prefer companies that are truly green, not just pretending to be. This report shows us how important it is to keep up with these trends for better hiring. Internal Hiring: Smart & Efficient The conference made it clear: promoting from within is not just smart, it’s efficient. According to Page Up, internal candidates fill roles with just four applications compared to 57 from job boards, and those employees stick around twice as long if the company invests in their growth. Top Tips: 🪜 Boost Internal Mobility: Create systems that showcase available opportunities within the organisation, and deliver an enjoyable application experience whilst fostering a culture where internal hiring between teams and departments is celebrated.  🌟 Invest in Skills: Push for programs that up-skill and re-skill your talent to evolve with changing business needs and growth areas. Make sure internal recruitment processes look beyond past experience and focus on future potential. 2. Diverse & Inclusive Workforce: Essential for Success Culture Amp data shows that a third of hiring managers have witnessed age, race, gender or accessibility needs discrimination in their company, yet diverse teams outperform by 35% (McKinsey). Moreover, 77% of Gen Z and 63% of Millennials prioritise DEI when evaluating a future employer. (Source: Staffing Industry Analysts) Top Tips: 🔎 Anonymise Applications: Keep it fair by focusing on skills, attitude, personality and experience, not personal details. 📢 Leverage Your Site To Showcase DEI: Use your careers pages to authentically highlight your organisation's DEI initiatives. 🔑 Diversify Sourcing Channels: Seek out platforms and networks that attract a broad spectrum of candidates. 3. Candidate Experience: Make It Count A positive candidate experience makes a candidate 38% more likely to accept a job offer from a company. (Source: Talent Board) Moreover, 8 in 10 candidates will share a positive experience with their work network and 50% will post a positive mention on a professional networking site like LinkedIn or Glassdoor. Sustainability is becoming a crucial topic during recruitment, with over three in five (62%) employers noting a rise in sustainability-related questions from candidates during interviews, according to new research from Totaljobs. 73% of workers indicated they would not apply to a company that falsely portrayed itself as environmentally friendly. In 2023, enrollment in vocational-focused community colleges surged by 16%, according to The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Gen Z professionals are embracing these trades and sharing their experiences on social media. 📱 👷♂️On TikTok, the hashtag #bluecollar saw a whopping 64% increase in posts compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, #electrician posts rose by 77%, and #constructionworker and #mechanic also gained popularity. 🔌🔧 Interestingly, new hires in blue-collar fields often earn higher pay than their counterparts in professional services like accounting, as revealed by ADP data. So, the message is clear: happiness and success don’t always require a bachelor’s degree or a desk job! 🌟
