This one statement alone is a stark reminder of the utterly decimated state of the UK's independent production sector: "In the wake of the Hollywood strikes, film production in the UK ground to a halt. With so much talent, crew and studio space freed up, it could have been a busy period for UK independent film production which has struggled to compete on home turf against the financial might of the US studios and streamers. But it wasn’t." How we produce and distribute indie film needs a massive rethink. The type of indie film we produce needs a rethink. Because there's plenty of capital available in the private equity world to finance indie films; they just don't trust us. They don't trust 'the numbers'; they don't trust the 'routes to market' (i.e. distribution) and they certainly don't trust the producers. EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101 EPISODE 06. | THE NUMBERS LOCATION: Thornbury Laundry We’ve just wrapped three Event Screenings in Melbourne and I though this would be a good time to give you a quick update on the numbers— So far EMOTION IS DEAD has screened at 15 cinemas to a total of 1,540 people. So If the average ticket is 20 bucks, that’s a total box office of $30,000.  With a 50/50 split with the cinemas, that roughly 15 grand revenue for the film. But there is considerable costs-- PR, Marketing, Poster printing, Postage, not to mention my own travel, accommodation and basic survival costs. When I first planned the tour, I hoped it would be profitable, but I now see that that’s probably not gonna happen-- So what am I doing all this for?? Well-- The biggest value this tour has given EMOTION IS DEAD is credibility-- It’s legitimised the film with Critics, the Media and the Film Industry and given it a real chance at life after the tour. I’m not gonna lie-- It’s been more work and more stress than I expected-- I actually had to cancel some of the smaller regional shows because I was just exhausted and overwhelmed and didn’t have the time or the money to do the marketing properly. But I’ve learned so much already and I’m really excited for the four remaining screenings in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. As an indie filmmaker, I've come to realize that the challenges we face in bringing our films to market are a unique blend of external and internal factors. Many obstacles are beyond our immediate control, but it's equally important to recognize the internal barriers we may impose on ourselves. Changing traditional entertainment industry practices to ensure more accessibility, funding equity, and a platform for untold stories is undoubtedly a noble pursuit. It's a fight for a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape. However, as we navigate this path, I find myself questioning whether the dream of seeing our stories on the big screen is the ultimate goal or merely a distraction. Are the values upheld by the traditional entertainment industry truly reflective of our own values as independent creators? The struggle to reshape industry norms can be a lengthy battle, and while it's essential to advocate for change, we must also be mindful of staying true to our unique voices and perspectives. Perhaps there's an alternative path—one where we redefine success on our terms, outside the confines of conventional measures. Let's continue pushing for industry reform, but let's also celebrate the power we have as independent creators to shape our narratives on platforms that align with our values. Producing Indie films is hard to manage.📽️😞 Despite our experiences and the many contacts we have already made, we are often confronted with difficult challenges.😓Of course, many concerns revolve around topics like financing, distribution, marketing and festivals. But sometimes the most unexpected things happen.😦 Expecting the unexpected is something indie filmmakers struggle a lot.❗ 📋You have to improvise when it's necessary. Always have a backup plan up your sleeve.⌚Time is key. Be completely prepared when starting shooting. 🎬You have to know about film rights.🤝Legal questions need to be clarified.
