Developing your people should never be viewed as an expense. It's an investment in your future and if done well, can increase revenues and the value of your company significantly. I remember when Jane first joined our board in a service company. She was sharp, insightful, and had a wealth of experience. But during meetings, she was quiet, almost invisible.  It wasn't until I had a chance to talk to her one-on-one that I learned why. She felt intimidated by a couple of dominant directors who always seemed to hog the conversation. Seeing Jane's potential go untapped was a huge loss for our company. We were growing fast, and we needed every brainpower we could get.  So, I did what any leader would do. I had a chat with the CEO, raising the red flag about Jane's situation and how it was affecting our discussions. The CEO, who was also the major shareholder, trusted my judgement and asked me to chair the next round of meetings. Before we even started, I had one-on-one conversations with each director, emphasising the importance of our company's core values, especially respect for every voice. I let them know that everyone's input mattered, and that I would be creating a space where everyone felt comfortable sharing their thoughts. It was amazing to see the shift. Jane blossomed. Her contributions became invaluable, and she became a crucial part of our decision-making process. Here's the thing: Every voice matters. When you create a culture of respect and inclusivity, you unlock the full potential of your team. That's how you unleash the power of your people and achieve incredible things.
