Did you know that African Americans have played an important part in the history of cooperatives? African Americans have used cooperation as an effective tool against discrimination, and mutual aid societies founded by African Americans were some of the first documented cooperatives in America. From the Underground Railroad to the Colored Farmers’ National Alliance and Co-operative Union, cooperatives became an important source for civil rights activism which in turn created more cooperatives. During February, we celebrate Black History Month, but it's important to appreciate the resilience and richness of Black culture year-round.
